I am just wondering, is everybody who work in accounting an exempt (not getting paid for overtime) employee??? I am not talking about big public accounting firms, they never pay overtime, but I want to here from folks who work in the industry.

not at our company but it totally varies depending on the company. I know some companies give you PTO for OT worked during close and such

Generally I've found it depends on what position you hold in private. The more entry level/clerical positions often have overtime available, once you get up to staff accountant or higher it is very rare. I've never had overtime pay in 18 years working in industry.

I work in industry as an Internal Auditor and don't get paid overtime, but I also never work overtime either.

My experience is the same as mla's. You become exempt once a supervisory role is reached, I believe staff is the same way in other departments.

I am not in supervisory role at all and work regular significant OT (about 60hr weeks for the last 3 weeks or so and will continue for the next 5-7 weeks) and do not receive PTO or any other compensation for the OT. I dont think there is much standard, just depends on the company

Generally anything above a clerk level is exempt and definitely anything supervisor and above. I've seen rare exceptions to this, usually found in union environments or companies that have been sued badly in the past and are gunshy about getting sued in the future (in CA anyway). Of course, once you have a CPA (per CA state law) you are considered a “professional” which is always exempt, regardless of employment level per labor law (doesnt mean you have to be exempt, just that a company cant ve sued if you are). Interesting that CA labor law…

I've worked exclusively in private, and found overtime pay to be non-existent. While the hours are often less than public, a very large benefit is often more flexibility in scheduling. This includes the ability to work from home on occasion, clocking out early, and choosing more desirable PTO dates.

I am a manager so no OT for me. My staff accountants and tax accountant are degreed and salaried so no OT for them. My accounting clerk, the inventory control department and AP department are nondegreed, hourly, and have the opportunity for OT. However, we go through periods where no OT is allowed so once they hit 40 hours they have to go home. The only department that really gets OT every year is inventory control because they work 60+ hours during physical inventory time. Throughout the rest of the year they really don't have to work OT and the AP department rarely ever has a need for OT. The general rule is that if OT is needed, the exempt employees do the work because they don't make OT. However, as 1911CPA stated–the exempt employees get better benefits–flexibility, not really clocking hours, etc. as long as the work gets done, but is available to work extra if needed, like at month end or when a company is acquired and getting them in line with our standards created extra work. The only “blackout” periods we have on PTO is the first week of every month and possible the last day of the month depending on the department.

At the large company that I work for Accounting Clerks and Specialists are hourly, but it would be extremely rare for OT to be approved. Anyone Staff accountant or higher is salaried and ineligible for OT. That being said, this busy season I put in some extra hours (I'm salaried) and they thanked me with a 5% bonus.
