I will be giving away an iPad 3 Thursday to someone in the forum. Here are the details:

    Who: 1 Randomly-selected winner.

You don’t have to be a current candidate to enter – Alums are welcome too!

The selection will be recorded through a screencast.

Note – the winner will be double-checked to make sure they don’t have more than one forum account posting in the giveaway thread, so no shenanigans.

What: iPad 3 – $499 model (winner will have the option to pay for any upgrades/features they want added)

Why: iPads are awesome (I have an iPad 2 … hope I win!) 😉

    How:

    1. “Like” another71 on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/another71)

    2. In this thread, post a CPA Exam or Accounting Career tip (or both) that you think would benefit a College Senior or recent graduate. If you work for a Big 4 or Regional Accounting Firm, interview tips or anything making the process easier would be great.

    That’s it … Good Luck!

    1) Work as many MCQ as possible – utilize any practice exams you have access to. I use Becker and they have really good practice exams that help prepare you for the real thing.

    2) Don't try to memorize everything you see of hear. Instead understand the concepts. Working math intensive questions will be easier if you do this.

I would say that the most important thing to do when it comes to studying for the CPA exam is do as many MCQs as possible!! There are various resources where you can get these, I would recommend getting them from other places in addition to your main study program. I used Becker, which I did like a lot. The videos can be tedious, but overall they have a good program that puts focus on the main areas that you need to know, since it is impossible to memorize every detail.

For anyone in Arizona (and I think a few other states as well), you need to have four additional upper-division accounting classes after your obtaining your bachelor's degree. I would recommend getting these done before studying for the CPA exam, or if you're not working getting them done while studying for the CPA exam. It is very frustrating to pass the CPA exam and then have to take a few more classes just to be certified!!

Exam Tip: Don't spread your studying out over too long of a period. You may end up forgetting things that you studied many weeks before the exam.

CPA Exam Tip – Practice tons of questions. I was always afraid to schedule too early too. I didn't want to take the test if I didn't feel prepared. I only scheduled when I felt fairly good about being prepared by the time the test came.

Also, make sure to follow the advice of your career counselors at school. I did not network, join clubs, and I did not attempt to get an internship while still in school. I had an accounting job and thought I was set. Go public then transfer to private!

    1. Commit to passing. Don't half-ass this thing, whole-ass.

    2. Do as many MC questions possible.

    3. Don't drink too much after each test (learned the hard way).

Exam tip to apply to each of the sections:

1st time through a section: Answer every easy concept question and mark those requiring a math calculation.

2nd time through the section: Do the easy calculations and leave marked the tough ones.

3rd time through the section: Do the difficult calcs that you can staying within your carefully budgeted time (very important).

    1) go into the exam feeling confident. If you go in feeling uneasy, any little question can trip you up and doubt yourself. Always keep your composure because panicking can lead you not thinking clearly.

    2) when going into interviews especially in big 4 firms where you may be greeted by people a year or two older than you, don't act overly confident or cocky, be modest.

RIGHT NOW is the best time to advance your career. It's not in a day, a week, a year from now. If you want it, you can achieve it. So set your goals, keep them as concise and specific as possible, and be ready to achieve more than you originally thought was possible.

My favorite tip of all: grab some tapes and listen to them on the ride to/from work.

Also, I got my first internship by e-mailing a teacher of mine a thank you letter for his advice and insight regarding the profession. He then asked if I had anything going and offered to interview at his firm. You never know where or when an opportunity will present itself.

I studied with Becker and sat through and highlighted what they told me to highlight. I also completed all of the questions and simulations (which is highly recommended). On the morning (or night before, if your exam is early), I did a quick scan through my entire book so that all the information was fresh in my memory. When I was taking the test, I found that I was able to recall my most recent memory of reading through the chapters quicker and easier than when I was studying.

I feel that this helped me a lot and I hope you are able to benefit from this tip.

Good luck to y'all and just keep your heads up, you can make it through 🙂

When you feel overwhelmed and defeated, take a short break. Don't get behind on studying. Repetition and writing the concepts will help retain the information. Home made flash cards are a huge help too. That way you are writing and studying at the same time. I am using Becker and I take my first test on Friday for FAR.
