Exam Tip: Take the exam as soon as possible when you graduate. And even if you get an industry job that does not require you to have your CPA still get it – you never know what opportunities will be down the road and may require the CPA. I learned the hard way, that even though I have the experience, many companies want to see CPA behind your name!

Exam Tip: Take your time during the exam. I hurried through two of the sections, and I retook them both. What does that tell you? Even during AUD, use all the time allowed. You can't carry over time to the next sections. Good luck all!

    Finished!

Tip: Allow plenty of time to study and review the materials. Set up a study plan to keep you on track. Determine what method of studying works best for you (i.e. reading, writing, flash cards). Be sure to practice as many MCQ as possible. The Wiley CPA exam review is a wonderful review site, that provides several MCQ.

Exam tip: Get started as soon as possible after college and before kids. Take everything in stride and limit your negativity on yourself. Create a solid study plan and stick to it. Also, practice saying no to friends and family that want to hang out.

    * Take the most challenging exam sections first. For most people this comes down to either REG or FAR.

    * Don't put off studying for the CPA after you graduate, apply with NASBA as soon you can get your full transcript.

    * If you are recruited for full-time, ask your recruiter if your company can give you the offer codes for Becker (Big4 all pay 100%). Have the books in hand before you graduate, you will want to start ASAP to get ready for the July window so you have time to take at least 2 parts in July/August.

    * Talk to people who have passed (in person, on here, or skim through old posts) and find a study plan that works best for you. Have a plan that benefits your learning style. I prefer reading the books/notes and doing MCQs. I only watch the lectures once at the beginning (becker).

    * Make sure you understand why you get questions right, if you feel like you are memorizing, get supplement questions.

    * When applying for Big 4 internships, keep in mind that your resume is a reflection of not only your academics and experience but your personality. Make sure you include interests, and fascinating relevant experiences (like studying abroad) on your resume.

Taking REG this Thursday. Lets hope my own recommendations pay off for this one!

Exam Tip: If you’re like me and have trouble sticking to your self-study program, take the live classes. Even though I every Saturday in class, it helped me stay on track. Plus you can talk with the instructors in person if you have questions.

Career Tip: Apply for a Big 4 internship between you sophomore and junior year. Although I didn’t end up getting the internship at that time, it set me up to do a Summer Leadership program one year, then an internship the next, and finally, a full-time job at Big 4.

Don't allow yourself to get discouraged and quit. This exam isn't about knowledge, it's about perseverance.

    Accounting Career Tip:

If you have missed out on Campus Recruiting and are having diffuculty finding a position, do not be afraid to get your resume on file with a temp agency such as Kforce. I did this and am about to slide into a permanent position thave I probably never would have been able to get had I not been a temp at this fortune 500 company.

Tips for college students graduating within the next year:

    1. Take the section with the least material first. Most candidates and review softwares have said to take the most difficult section of the exam first. I think you should take the section with the least amount of material first in order to boost confidence.

    2. Avoid racing just to take sections. Make sure you know the material, because repeating sections is expensive.

    3. Try not to talk about the exam to co-workers. It's not a competition. This creates extra stress that is not needed. Each person studies differently.

    4. Research the study program options. It's very important to find a study program and organize a schedule that creates a work-life-study balance.

    5. Sleep. This may seem easy, but it makes it a lot easier to study when it gets down to cram time.

Exam Tip: For AUD use Roger CPA (in my opinion) he explains the material much better then Yaeger. Have a very well planned out schedule AND STICK TO IT, that's the only way you can do it. Shut your internet when studying you shouldn't get carried away.

    FAR-65,69,80 EXP,73, 80
    AUD-61,65,84 EXP, 73,78 DONE......
    REG-73 So close, 64, 81
    BEC-69, 70, 69, 77

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT, AFTER 3.5 YEARS OF STUDYING
    I'M FINALLY DONE!!!!!!!!!!

    Tips? Let's see…..

Study whenever you can. For example, I study in the waiting room at speech therapy, in the lobby at ballet school, at a local cafe during Boy Scouts.

Make sure you really pay attention to the AICPA's percentages of what is on the exam, but realize that is an average and you may get more than the average number of any one topic.

Make flashcards and use them. Re-write your notes. Buy Jeff's NINJA notes. πŸ˜‰ Use more than one set of MCQs (I use Wiley in addition to CPAExcel.)

Realize that you won't die if you fail….it will just feel that way. LOL

    REG - 89
    BEC - 82
    FAR - 87
    AUD - 81
Used CPAexcel, Wiley Online Practice, and NINJA!

    Big 4 Tips:

    Getting Interview:

-Talk to your accounting professors you will be surprised how many of them have connections that can really help you land that interview

-Go to career fairs meet and greets and any events they have to show interest

-Make looking for a job a full time job. This means dedicating a set amount of time a week/a day to send resumes or follow up etc.. Dedication pays off.

    1) Interview Tips: It's all about being calm and relaxed

Basic Tips like getting on time practicing interview questions are all well in good but you also want to be relaxed when you are there so here are some things to think about

-Try to schedule a really nice event the night or day after your interview so that you can have something relaxing to look forward to. You will be surprised how much this relaxes you during an interview and it can even be something you can talk about during interview as well.

-Make sure you drive to the interview location the weekend before your interview so you that you are sure you know how to get there. Navigation systems sometimes don't work when you really need them.

-I tried not to get there too early but at the same time I wanted to avoid traffic, so I got in a half hour earlier and just stopped by a McDonalds to eat breakfast

-Don't drive too aggressive as you approach the interview site as I have heard of instances where people have cut off the interviewing partner (did not end well lol)

-Try to personalize your thank you letters so if the partner talks about his kids or whatever make sure to include something a little about that in the letter to let them know were actually paying attention

The most important thing to remember is that it's just one interview and the good things about a job is that you only need to get one :), so no matter how low of a success rate you may have you will eventually get that job

    CPA

For the CPA I would strongly suggest you study in a method that works for you. You will hear a lot of suggestions but at the end of the day just remember that you are the one who has to pass, so if you are the type of person who can study by taking lots of notes and having flash cards then study that way. If you are a person like me who feels better just doing lots of questions (like a math class) then study that way. I also suggest signing up for a date and sticking to it so that way you know when you have to study.

Remember one thing about this test, its' not about how high your score is it's just about passing it.

    Career in BIG 4:

Public accounting is very challenging but you will be amazed how much you can learn. The only thing I suggest is that if it ever gets to a point where you are truly not happy there anymore then you should leave. Try to remember that things aren't always better on the other side and if you can take control of your career (which you get more of as you move up in the firm) you may find that the work life balance is actually obtainable. If it does ever get to a point that you feel you need to leave then make sure you use experiences as your guide to your future career options.

Exam Tip – If you are given a chance to have time off before starting a job to study, DO IT. This test is harder than I thought and it's not impossible but very difficult to work and study. I also found it to be extremely helpful to write out the notes.

Career Tip – It's so important to network when looking for a position. I was told by several Big 4 recruiters that they were looking for people who attended their events (bowling, informational whatever they just want to see that you are proactive). Also, make sure you ask them questions during the interview as well. You need to make sure that this company fits your needs too.

    CPA Exam Tip:

    1) Half the battle is figuring out the best way to study. I used Becker and am half way done, but I've also used Wiley Test Bank to mix it up (so I don't memorize the Becker MC questions), and Another 71's outlines. Everyone's study method is different so find the one that works for you by researching how each prep course teaches you (i.e. lectures, writing notes, MC problems)

    2) Stay focused during study times! My motto is ” STUDY NOW or RE-TAKE LATER” – I literally have it written around my study area!

    BIG 4 Interview Tip:

    1) Ask Questions- they want to see that you are interested! Think outside the box to come up with unique questions.

    2) Try and stand out. If you put yourself in their shoes, ask yourself what would make you remember someone? I found out at our pre-interview dinner that my interviewer was from my hometown and was a huge fan of our NFL team, so I brought him a little team token. It gave us something to break the ice on interview day, and I guess made me stick in his mind because I got the job πŸ™‚

I wish everyone the best of luck with the CPA exams & job hunt! Thank you for all of your support and posts on Another71- you are a constant source of motivation!

Exam Tip: Do NOT put off what you can do today, ESPECIALLY when it means taking these tests IMMEDIATELY after graduating. Take these tests while the information is still relatively fresh and you haven't pigeon holed your knowledge of accounting into whatever division you may work in. Also, before life gets crazy busy and you still have the time, take the tests! I said I was going to and then kept putting it off…for 3 years. It's like starting over on some of these topics πŸ™ and rules/laws change so frequently I had to relearn so many.

    BEC - 11/20/10 78 and I just lost credit πŸ™
    REG - 02/22/11 77
    AUD - 04/02/11 87
    FAR - 61, 71, 74
