I will be giving away an iPad 3 Thursday to someone in the forum. Here are the details:

    Who: 1 Randomly-selected winner.

You don’t have to be a current candidate to enter – Alums are welcome too!

The selection will be recorded through a screencast.

Note – the winner will be double-checked to make sure they don’t have more than one forum account posting in the giveaway thread, so no shenanigans.

What: iPad 3 – $499 model (winner will have the option to pay for any upgrades/features they want added)

Why: iPads are awesome (I have an iPad 2 … hope I win!) 😉

    How:

    1. “Like” another71 on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/another71)

    2. In this thread, post a CPA Exam or Accounting Career tip (or both) that you think would benefit a College Senior or recent graduate. If you work for a Big 4 or Regional Accounting Firm, interview tips or anything making the process easier would be great.

    That’s it … Good Luck!

    ***

    New Prizes Added!

    – 5 Dave Ramsey Financial Peace University Memberships (Online)

    – 5 Complete NINJA Audios

    – 5 Complete NINJA Notes

My tip to a soph or junior would be to find a quality internship where you're able to see how real accounting works. Learning from a text isn't enough, for me it helped to actually do it myself.

For a senior, I'd recommend getting an accoutning job at a small business. Thats what I did, I wasn't pushed into a closet and left there to learn for myself. I recieved hands on training with my boss, and now I basically run the whole accounting department.

Start studying as soon as possible after graduation… then make a study schedule and force yourself to stick to it. Break your studying up, I study 1 hour in the morning, 1 hour at lunch and 2 hours in the evening. I also reward myself with a “weekend off” every other weekend if I have studied hard throughout the last weeks.

Get the test over with ASAP! Start studying near graduation and you will be ahead of the curve. I have friends who are A/R or A/P clerks and they keep pushing off the exam, thinking it's a cakewalk. You need to put time and effort in order to slay this monster. But if I can do, then anyone can!

I'm currently studying for AUD, but I dont work well with acronym's.

One trick i do is with Alpha and Beta risk.

The Alpha dog can't be efficient because he has to spend all his time fighting to stay top dog. (incorrect rejection)

The Beta dog can't be effective, otherwise he would be the top dog. (incorrect acceptance)

You always want to be the Alpha dog, if you have to be a dog.

My tip – don't pay for more than two exams at a time. I thought it was a good idea to initially pay for all four exams at the same time, to motivate me to study. Well, life happens and I ended up with 2 expiring NTS.

The best advice I can give is to try to get an internship as early as possible in your college career. Internships are great to find out what you will be really doing on a daily basis.

CPA tip: Try to get as much done as possible before you graduate! Crazy hours in public accounting really put a limit on your study habits.

    Exam tip:

Stick to a schedule during the exam. if you allocate 40 mins for MCQ's, make sure you dont go over. Treat each question as a new start. Don't think about previous questions and answers until you are done with testlet. This might cause you to lose focus on the upcoming questions.

Exam tip: Whatever you do to get ready for the CPA exam, the most important aspect is mental preparation and a positive attitude. Without a firm commitment and a positive mindset, where you assure yourself you are going to pass this test no matter what, you will not get very far. So make a plan, stick to it and wake up every day picturing yourself a CPA and soon you will be one.

When a boss asks you a question you do not know, it is okay to say you don't know, but always follow up with, but I'll find out! Which ties nicely with know the right people to ask questions to receive correct answers!
