I will be giving away an iPad 3 Thursday to someone in the forum. Here are the details:

    Who: 1 Randomly-selected winner.

You don’t have to be a current candidate to enter – Alums are welcome too!

The selection will be recorded through a screencast.

Note – the winner will be double-checked to make sure they don’t have more than one forum account posting in the giveaway thread, so no shenanigans.

What: iPad 3 – $499 model (winner will have the option to pay for any upgrades/features they want added)

Why: iPads are awesome (I have an iPad 2 … hope I win!) 😉

    How:

    1. “Like” another71 on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/another71)

    2. In this thread, post a CPA Exam or Accounting Career tip (or both) that you think would benefit a College Senior or recent graduate. If you work for a Big 4 or Regional Accounting Firm, interview tips or anything making the process easier would be great.

    That’s it … Good Luck!

    ***

    New Prizes Added!

Tip: On the SIMS for Audit, FAR and REG make use of the literature. You can get entire SIMS right just by taking a few extra minutes to look up some answers!

    REG (7/7/11) 75
    FAR (7/28/11) 76
    BEC (8/27/11) 81
    AUD (10/15/11, 1/20/12) 63, 91

    DONE!!!

Exam Tip 1: Keep at it. This may seem simple but you've already covered most of the material in your accounting classes. It is a huge amount of material to review (FAR) but you can do it!

Exam Tip 2: Use a study planner and stick to it. This is one on this web page and I've found the ELL system to be very effective with working full time and having young children.

Exam Tip 3: This one is personal preference so some may disagree, but take FAR first. Get the beast out of the way!

    F -7/11/2012 (77)
    A - 8/30/2012 (68), 10/4/2012 (78)
    R - 11/21/2012 (84)
    B - 01/05/2013 (85)

The J in NINJA is not emphasized enough. After listening to Jeff's podcast and hearing that taking notes one time and not rewriting them is simply a waste of time, I became determined to make sure my time invested would not go for nothing.

My advice- No matter how mindless and boring rewriting your notes may seem to be, don't let your valuable time and effort go to waste.

Read a sentence at a time from your notes and transfer it without referencing your notes again. You will understand how it commits to memory.

    Good Luck

Exam Tip: Take some time to relax between sections. I used the Gleim system, and in between every 3 units, I would take a couple of nights off to let the information soak into my think skulll, then I would start on the the new ones. You can't stress about the test to much because then you'll focus on the fact that it's a test instead of the material.

Regional Firm Tip: Know the specialization of the firm and be exciting, don't just “act” excited. Most importantly, be yourself. You want a firm that not only meets your interests but meshes well with your personality.

    Good luck!

Exam tip #1 Take the exam as soon as possible after graduation. These test pull from pretty much every business class that you've taken. The fresher the material is the less time you will spend re-learning a concept and more time you spend understanding the bigger picture. Also the less likely you are to have a family, full-time job, service organization, etc to try to juggle in with your study time.

Exam tip #2 Do NOT get discouraged! Even if you pull 40% on the MCQ homework the first time through, you can and will do it, it just takes determination and perseverance. As a repeat of several of the above posters, when working the MCQ make sure to take the time to understand why the correct answer is correct and why the wrong answers were wrong.

    AUD - Oct 2011 - 79
    BEC - Feb 2012 - 84 (seriously thought I failed this one)
    REG - May 2012 - 84 (hmmm.....do they actually grade the SIMS???)
    FAR - Aug 2012 - 80

I must be dreaming.... am I really done!!!

A little background, 8 years ago I received my Masters of Accountancy. The next logical step was taking and passing the CPA exam. I took the summer off to “recoup” and then found out that my wife and I would be expecting a little one the following year. I half-heartedly attempted the CPA exam and failed twice so I quit. 7 years later, I realized the err of my ways and started studying again for the CPA exam. Within 11 months, I had passed all four sections.

My advice is pretty simple: 1) Get your spouse/significant other on your side. Explain that life will suck for a while, but if they can sacrifice for a short period of time, good things will come. 2) Make the CPA exam your priority. I was a hermit for the better part of a year but I am done because I had my wife's support and the determination (and grace of God) to get it done.

    That's it.

    Career tip:

Make sure that in your career you become selective in your job selection and find somewhere you will be happy and work you enjoy. Ultimately, working takes up a large portion of your time so make sure you are happy every day and do something that is both challenging and rewarding for you

    BEC 8/29/11 (76)
    AUD 10/15/11 (79)
    FAR 11/29/11 (81)

NEVER give up on your goals. The CPA exam is hard, but it can be done! You'll meet some CPA's who passed it on their first try, and then you'll meet others that had to take it so many times it's hard to keep count!

School is important, but not as important as using your mind and being logical in everything you do. Take the knowledge you have gained in school, and never stop improving from there. There will always be something new to conquer.
