InactiveI’m a dude looking to update my decade old interview suit. What is the power color these days? Really curious about popular color and style. I don’t want to be that old guy wearing an outdated suit.

InactiveNumber 1 rule of dressing yourself and the motto i live by – “Look good, feel good, play good” I guess were not playing anything but if you are comfortable with how you look you will feel good about yourself and have more confidence.

Member“Knock em dead” a book about job hunting/resume/interview skills etc says NEVER wear a black suit…unless…you are interviewing to be an undertaker.
I personally wear either a dark charcoal greyish suit, or dark blue. Usually either a white or blue shirt and maybe a pretty simple red or dark colored tie. (red generally is a normal red, but other than that its usually pretty dark.)

The Managers is not going to say oh this guy didnt wear a gray suite he wore a black suite we are not going to hire him. Come on man think about it it was a stupid question.

MemberIt's not a stupid question. How you dress says a lot more about you than you think. And while no one is going to NOT HIRE someone because they wore black instead of blue, how you're dressed and carry yourself says a lot about your confidence, charisma, etc. And whether people like to think it or not, attractive people have an edge. Fit and healthy people have an edge. And so do tall people. Does it mean they'll get hired over someone who is more qualified? Probably not but if you're dressed well and look good, it can only help you.

InactiveAs long as your attire is clean and pressed and your shoes are real shoes (not flip-flops) and polished, I don't think it really matters. It wouldn't matter to me. I know that getting a suit tailored is seriously expensive so just do the best you have with what you've got or what you can afford. Your resume and demeanor should do most of the talking. But this is just my opinion and I have zero Big 4 experience.

InactiveIf you really think about it, a black suit vs a gray suit doesn't make one difference whatsoever. It's actually kind of stupid to think that an interviewer would even care (or notice). Like the above two people said, people who clearly take care of themselves are going to have an edge. I would worry more about making sure your suit is dry cleaned and that you've taken a shower, then whether or not your suit is navy or black. Really, who cares.

ParticipantSuit aside, have you considered what shoes you will be wearing? Having interviewed more candidates than I would have liked to in a lifetime, shoes are more talked about in a post-interview discussion than most people realize (SF and NY regions).
All guys should invest in a quality pair of black and brown shoes. After that I would consider different shades of tan/brown. Some brands that are middle of the line and are generally of good quality: Allen Edmonds and To Boot New York.
The last thing you want to wear are box-toed shoes, unless you are going for the Bigfoot look.

ParticipantThe most conservative is charcoal/navy suit (solid) and a white shirt. Clean, conservative, not flashy at all, and looks great. If you want to get fancy, you can try out different ties (not too crazy, but as long as it's not neon, you can get some funky colors here and still be professional).
Save the light grey, black, and pinstripes for another day.

He asked about the color of the suite and which COLOR is better. He didnt not ask if it matters how you are dressed and carry yourself. Your reply should have stopped at “no one is going to NOT HIRE someone because they wore black instead of blue” because it answered his question.
He didnt ask if it mattered if he didnt shower , went in with holes in his suite, if he was overweight, if he was tall or short so all that information was irrelevant to his question. Even if he did ask that that would be a stupid questions because of course it will matter if you go to an interview with wrinkled pants , dirty coat , and smelling like a pig because you didnt shower for a week.

InactiveI read on monster.com that, while you can't go wrong with a black suit, gray suits show experience/sophistication and navy shows control/trustworthiness.
I have suits in black, navy, khaki color, and white…I don't always go on interviews, but when I do I wear a navy suit 🙂
It's simply the best.
P.S. pinstripes are passé

InactiveI think black suits for women are fine. However black suits for men is a definite NO unless you are going to a funeral or trying to dress down to a black tie event.
Now, I have seen a lot of accountants wearing black suits, so I don;t think they care that much.
I dont think you can go wrong with brooks brothers or suit supply.

My response was to YOU and your hostility towards him. I may have been too nice so let me be more direct. I already responded to his question and it was my opinion that he shouldn't focus on color but on the fit. And then I gave him a variety of choices, charcoal being my pick.
YOU on the other hand, went off on the guy, contributed nothing and said the question was stupid, borderline insulting his intelligence by telling him to use his head. As if he had dared to ask something so ridiculous it didn't dignify a response. This thread has about 20 responses with only 1 of them being not only useless, but quite hostile. Yours.

InactiveFor ladies – are shoes that important as it for men ?
What I mean to say is I have a nice pair of clarks that have a very small heel. Its nothing fancy, more of a simple classic look. I normally wear them to work and was going to wear it for any interview I get.
Should I be investing in a pair a shoes just for the interview ?

MemberI love Clarks, they're so comfortable, Rockports too. I think as long as you're not wearing sneakers or flip flops to an interview, you should be fine. That's what I would do, a simple, classic look. If I were going to spend money to prepare for an interview it would be on the suit itself, not on shoes.
