I recently applied for a couple of internships with McGladrey even though I’ve been out of school for two years. At this point, I’ll try almost anything to get into public accounting. Does anyone know if the firms are even willing to take someone who’s no longer a student? Or am I just wasting my time?

Get an intership if you can get it. Go on craigslist or any place offering internships. Since your only working part time right now…GO to your local accounting firms and tell them you'll work for free – tell them you'll work a 20 hour a week unpaid internship. They'd be foolish not to find somehting for you and they might just respect your drive for success. Then at least you build some experience. I was out of accounting for 3 years with the only experience being an internship that I did in my last year of my Masters Degree program. I went to a local tax firm and told them I would do a 3 month unpaid internship just to get the experience. Then I started applying for staff level tax and accountng positions and landed one by the end of my intrnships. Just get some experience at public CPA firm in any fashion and you'll be on your way.

Don't think anything is beneth you when you start out. An unpaid internship could be the first step in a profitable carrer.
