I’m a tax intern at a midsize firm in NYC & about half the time I literally have no work to do. I email everyone in my group everyday, and it just seems no one wants to give me work. A few of the interns also have the same problem, and some are almost always busy. It seems the audit interns get more work & even get to travel to clients

It’s definitely a demeaning feeling not doing anything; at least I get to study more for school & the CPA test.

    Hopefully things turn around…

Ex big-four CPA here (downtown Los Angeles). I started out in tax and I can tell you that the MAIN purpose to any of the internships is to get a sense of the people you will be working with. Tax is a very volatile practice in public accounting and normally when there is a ton of work to do it is hard to assign it to interns as you are there for a limited time. Also, it is difficult for seniors to not only teach you the work, but have to review it and correct it if there is not time to explain this to you. My advice is to network with SENIORS as those are the people you will be working with when it comes to busy season time. The real learning in tax happens on engagements during busy season…not as an intern. I had interns do a few smaller partnership returns and help with corporate tax input, but never would they have the time for an entire return. Tax is a little more difficult to integrate interns as the work is a little more complicated than what a staff auditor does and there is more to it than just knowing tax laws (forms, dates, workpapers, etc.). Hang in there and just enjoy your down time for now šŸ˜‰ I was in an 8 week internship program and I probably did about 2 weeks of real work. Most of it was to experience the firm. You could always walk around and see if someone will show you returns they are working on. I used to walk interns through returns and how the workpapers we do in excel flow into the software which eventually produces a return. A lot of the complex tax work is not going to come to as you an intern so do not worry! Honestly getting the offer is more about NOT screwing up socially than ACTUALLY performing on returns. No one is going to expect you to know how to do a consolidated federal return as an intern or deal with partnership allocations.
