i just started working as a bookkeeper in one small law firm. Since i am international student, it’s difficult to get a job as accountant. Will the bookkeeper position count toward to the requirement experience for illinois license ? has anyone had experience with other position besides accountant?

I think it might depend on whether you're working under a CPA or not but I'm not 100% sure

I have been told via phone (both by ILBOA and the Illinois CPA Society) that the supervisor signing off on your work does not have to be a CPA, however I can't find that in writing at the moment.

Regarding your experience, this is from the application: The Verification of Employment / Experience (VE-PAE) must be completed by your supervisor to document at least one year of full-time experience providing any type of service or advice involving the use of accounting, attest, management advisory, financial advisory, tax, or consulting skills that may be gained through employment in government, industry, academia, or public practice. The experience must have been gained after completion of the education required to take the Uniform CPA Examination.

Of course I can't speak for the State, but it certainly seems to me that working as a bookkeeper “involves the use of accounting.”

@Ntw6817 and @DJN Thanks for your information. I just called to the board and they said that it should be fine with the bookkeeping work experience and the supervisor doesn't need to be a CPA.
