    Hi guys

Can someone clarify what the work requirement is to obtain the COA license in IL?

I worked in public for only 6 months before switching to a small retail company as a staff accountant. After I pass all the exams, do I have to leave my current job and go back to public in Order to obtain 1 year work experience in public accounting?

You don't have to work in public. You just have to work as an accountant under a licensed CPA for 1 year.

Hi April, just to clarify. Unless it has changed in the last year or so you do not need to work under a licensed CPA to get experience, just in an accounting-related function. It is a pretty broad requirement. I was a financial analyst and my supervisor, who signed my application, was not a CPA. My experience was not questioned.

My apologies – @Javilon is absolutely correct. From the IL CPA Society's website (https://www.icpas.org/information/licensing-registration/initial-license-requirements):

    Experience
Experience may be gained through employment in government, industry, academia, or public practice, and is not required to be acquired under the supervision of a licensed CPA. The experience must have been gained after completion of the education required to take the CPA Exam.
