short&sweet, my boss has very different work style from me. I am very energetic and my boss is in senior age, super lacks energy & always waits until last min (which I hate). I have been working here for 1.5 yrs. I’m pretty sure that I should try something else. I will not quit my job until I get a new one. My title is staff accountant (healthcare industry). Can anyone suggest me if I might get a good chance to get a new job (CPA firms or industries) with this experience ? I am working on CPA but have not passed any part.

This is my opinion and my opinion only.

I would say get the CPA exams done while you can first or at least a few sections out of the way first. Assuming you get another job, you may not have the time necessary to study for the exams. Plus getting either the exams or a few sections done will help with finding a new job.

Same problem here. My boss is so laid back he really doesn't require any budgets to be done, doesn't want to see a breakdown of payroll by department, ignores all IRS and FASB announcements, and I'm just flabbergasted because all my training is just going to waste.

Pass the CPA exam first then move between jobs.

Depending on what sector of the healthcare industry, CPA firms are hiring experienced reimbursement folks to work as reimbursement consultants all the time. Further, CPA firm staff people are leaving to go to healthcare industry clients all the time. And obviously, healthcare industry staff people job hop from one company to the next all the time.

I don't think you will be challenged to find another job elsewhere; however, if the hours are decent, I would stay where you are and pass the exam first.

Thanks for all your thoughts guys, I fell like staff accountant is just a title for me. I mainly do AP on daily basis. I have seen healthcare reimbursement jobs posted but no idea what you really do in the real world. I process reimbursements related to our consumers but it seems something simple, not complicated healthcare reimbursements. I try to learn more and get into complicated stuffs like cost reports but my position limited me and my boss does not let me explore! I can only see the reports. Anyway my hour is so flexible and light but underpay. I am not sure if my boss is a CPA. I am ok to work here until I pass CPA, just sucks and I don't think my boss is a CPA. I would not have a CPA to sign me off when I pass.

That's a tough decision, but if he isn't a CPA you might want to consider moving on. As someone mentioned above, accounting firms are always hiring employees with healthcare experience. It's a growing industry due to the affordable care act and there are all kinds of health centers opening up and growing. My firm does some health centers and it's a pretty specialized industry. Even if you don't have the specific knowledge right now, at least having it on your resume it will stick out to a recruiter or interviewer.
