I need career advice!

Ok. So I have passed 3 of 4 sections of my exam and going to take the last one in a few weeks. I have all my experience and education, so hoping to be a CPA and in few months.

The problem is I need a new job. I have been an auditor within state government for 6+ years and I am going nuts. I am an ambitious person and this job seems to be a dead end…no way to move up and dealing with people who have no ambition. So I don’t know what I want to do now. Does government experience count for anything? I am mostly looking for possible career options. Should I try for some public accounting experience?

Also, I have an MBA, if that matters.

I would appreciate any suggestions, comments, etc.

I'm not very familiar with government accounting/auditing, so feel free to take my comments with plenty of salt.

    Two things come to mind:

1.) Try moving to a different government agency if you can, I'm sure this is not as easy as it sounds, but I remember reading about this on another CPA forum. Can't recall though, You might want to do a google search.

2.) Transition to public accounting at a firm that specializes with governmental audits. Although I'm sure it's not the same kind of work, the audit/professional/communication skills are all transferable. Your CPA will make you especially attractive, and maybe with your experience you can come in as a Senior and be promoted to Manager once you learn the ropes (total conjecture on my part, but seems like a reasonable possibility).

From there, you can try to branch out to other industries within the firm, and stay there or get out of public entirely.

Hopefully someone with actual experience in governmental auditing can chime in.

blue cello – What state are you in? All of my experience is in public/private companies. I woudl definitely say once you get your CPA that will make you marketable to lots of companies. I would say with 6 years of experience in audit. You could definitely look at Sr. Auditor or above position with a company. I am not sure if you are looking at companies or is it just public accounting. For me, working for a company gives me the flexibility as far as work-life balance versus what I have seen some public accountign folks on this forum post about their schedules. I also like it because to me there is a lot of room to move around to different areas of accounting (GL, Tax, Auditing, FA, & Financial Reporting or even move to the Finance side of the business as in Business Analysis or Financial Analysis)

    Hey Guys,

I am also interested in the auditing field but Im having a really hard time landing interviews. I live in Boston but am willing to work anywhere from Rhode Island to Boston. I have no experience in auditing but im currently in graduate school getting my MBA with accounting concentration and studying for the cpa exam. Does anyone on here have any contacts in public accounting firms in my area? I know CPA firms are slow during the summer but I'm hoping I can get something. Please let me know. My email is bovalles0925@gmail.com.
