Hi, everyone. I have spent the bulk of 2010 trying to get these three letters behind my name, and they’re almost there (hopefully). Now it’s time for me to find a serious accounting job. I live in the Savannah, GA area, but am not limited to this area. Relocation is no problem. I have a year of audit experience and will be able to obtain my license after I get a final passing score (150 credit hours satisfied). Just trying to get some leads so I can start networking and jump start my career. Any help/comments at all would be greatly appreciated.

By the way, apparently, CPA’s are in demand as I read an article yesterday on yahoo.com. It was about jobs that desperately need to be filled, and accountants/CPA’s were number one on the list! Can someone please prove to me that this is, in fact, true?

Well, just to let everyone know I'm still unemployed. This absolutely sucks. Sent out my application and am waiting on my worthless license. I hope everyone that's taking this exam has many years of experience or already has a job because I only have one year of experience, and it's just a joke at this point. I'm starting to look for work at more of a national or even international level. I'll be looking for some manual labor this week for a quick fix to buy me some time. Yes, a CPA toiling in the hot sun for minimum wage.

I used to think CPA's were almost gods and wanted to be one so bad, now I think they're a joke. My only hope is when some of these old CPA's start to die off 'cause God knows they're never going to retire!!

Big4 is going to start ramping up hiring including a number of experienced hires. What city/region are you in?

I'm in the Savannah, GA area so really close to Jacksonville, FL, but I would move to the North Pole tomorrow if there was a job there waiting on me. I've applied to a few Big 4 positions online, but I completely don't expect them to contact me. Do you have any contacts/suggestions? Thanks.

Offer your plan to God, and your plan will succeed!

I am 64 years old. Age discrimination is alive and well! I have sent out hundreds of resumes over the past 10 years. I have not even received the time of day, much less a job interview.

I once was a CEO of a business with 45 employees. I get it. I am not 24 years old. All of us only get one opportunity to be 24 years old. I had my opportunity when I was 24 years old and I made the most of it. The reality is that I am 40 years down the road.

I am here to report a miracle. Today I will get a job offer in my home town that is my definition of a dream job, a job with a local CPA firm that wants me to specialize in the love of my life, financial planning for small business entities! I never solicited or sent a resume for this job. The partner of this CPA firm, who is also a CFS, called me because he heard from two of his church friends that I was a quality guy who was looking to work for a Christian CPA. Wow! When ALL of the doors are closed, God finds a crack in a window upstairs.

Glad to know I'm not the only one in this situation. Right now I'm also studying for the CPA exam like all of you (congrats to the ones that are done). I got my bachelors in Accounting from Umass in 2010 and right now Im in graduate school getting my MBA (concentration in accounting) along with studying for the cpa exam. Its really hard to land even an internship in MASS or Rhode Island which is where I'm looking. Ive called and sent my resume to a bunch of firms and nothing. Its funny how people say “put yourself out there and network” but I feel like I do that and nothing seems to work. At this point im feeling like all of this is a waste of my time and money and that these degrees dont matter. And I dont want to work a crappy job that is not even in my field anymore. Im tired of that. I want to start my career as a public accountant (auditor in specific) but its really hard out here. If anyone knows of any opportunities in the Rhode Island area or MASS please let me know. Thanks.

I live in the upstate NY area and I know that accounting firms around here are hiring like crazy. Every person that I graduated with in has either already started working full time, or have been hired and are starting when they finish their masters. I don't know if you want to move this far, but I know firms are hiring here. I don't want to send out exactly where I live but if you want to email me I can send you the names of the regional firms in my area. shortcj630@aim.com

@ rezaking…do you really think that they can be much help? Ive worked with a staffing agency before but all they had for me were like office jobs, not really anything in my field and thats what i dont want. But i mean i could try with robert half, i guess it wont hurt.

@ I will pass, thank you so much for your help, but right now I have to stay here until I finish my masters at least. But Ill def keep your email just in case for the future.

I thought I was the only who had bad experience with Account temps. They make you take crazy excel test. None of the recruiters have any background in accounting. If you have the software skill, then you got a job. I had bosses who had no education in Accounting or Finance but they were my managers!! I have double masters and no job. Trying to stay focused with my CPA exam.

hardworker.. they can be helpful but you have to know how to deal with them. make sure they are 100% aware of what your goals are and what your looking for.. this way they wont even bother with those stupid office jobs.. also, make sure you tell them that you need to give the ok before they send your resume out. This way you will track your process and if its a job youve already applied for then you can tell them to not do it. Ultimately you just want to use them to get a little help and to help you get exposed to more opportunities out there… they have contacts and sometimes thats what its all about.

Also some companies wont mind paying a little more money to have the ability to try people out before they hire them. it provides them with some sort of inssurance.

but again, make sure they dont hand out your resume without you knowing.
