I recently passed the CPA exam and went to work for a public accounting firm. I HATE IT! Before passing the CPA I worked in several non-profits and really enjoyed the work. I found it satisfying and worthwhile. Public accounting firms just seem to suck the joy right out of life. However, I do need to fulfill the experience requirement before I can become licensed and am having trouble meeting the requirement of working directly for a CPA at a non-profit organization. Any advice?

I did resign from the public accounting position and decided to get education in lieu of experience (a Colorado option) to get my license. Sooo I'm back to school for 5 classes and can work for whoever the #@!! I please. When I didn't receive pay from the firm I resigned from I inquired and was told “we can't find your paperwork, please resubmit it”. Not a shining testimony for a cpa firm. Having been a victim of identity theft before, I am not real happy that they have lost my ssn, direct deposit information, etc. I am not wanting to give all of this information to them again. Any advice? Should I report them?

Bill Brasky was the best public accountant in the south eastern United States. He once successfully defended a sheep farmer from the IRS while wearing a real live wolf a suit. That man could drink, and produce offspring, he is a real son of a bitch.

    To Bill Brasky!

Bill Brasskey has showed that article to everyone he knows. The unicorn puking a rainbow makes it.

I don't want to be a downer here cgcolorado, but you are aware that the education in lieu of experience option for Colorado is disappearing in July, correct?

Other posters on this board have heard directly from the CO Board of Accountancy recommending that everything be completed and submitted by February/March in order to make the deadline. It doesn't matter when you file; if the license isn't issued by June 30th, you are SOL. Five classes sounds like multiple semesters of work…

With Colorado getting rid of education in lieu of experience option it's going to become a huge headache for you to meet the experience requirement.

There is stil Massachusetts for non-reporting license. I also think there are states where you don't necessarily need your supervisor to be a cpa.

    Far: 76 (Wiley Test Bank)
    Aud: 77 (Wiley Test Bank)
Reg: 61, 76 (Wiley book, Wiley Test Bank)
    Bec: 86 (Wiley Test Bank)

Just remember that if you consider MA for the non reporting license it has to be a masters degree, having a bachelors + 30 extra credits won't qualify you for the Non Reporting License.

In CO you need to be licensed before July 1, if you're taking classes that end in May, by the time you get your transcripts and send everything in you likely will have missed the deadline to waive the experience requirement.

    FAR- 77
    AUD -49, 71, 84
    REG -56,75!
    BEC -75

Massachusetts CPA (non reporting) since 3/12.

and I'm curious about your statement that you didn't receive pay from the firm you resigned from. I know its different state to state but if you resign the employer has until the next regularly scheduled pay date to pay you, they don't have to cut you a check on the spot unless they fire you. You need to know what you are entitled to and when.

Since you started this thread about a week ago and resigned since then, chances are you haven't had a payday that has transpired in the interim.

Was a pretty hasty and ill-advised decision to resign if you ask me.

cgcolorado, I was just idly browsing this thread but saw juuustin's post. If you're now unemployed (so free to study 24/7 or close to it) and needing to get the credits quickly, I may be able to help you, as I have experience with several self-paced college courses and other options to get credit. Do you need the 5 classes to be in specific things or just any additional 25 credits? You can get them by the March suggested deadline if you buckle down – won't be easy, but can be done. If I know more about what you need, I can better advise you on what options might be suitable.
