A controller position opened with our corporate office – and I applied. I have been a senior accountant with them for just over 3 yrs. I got the offer today. So excited! Plus a little concerned about getting my BEC done while starting a new job. Ack!

Congrats @ CPA_Driven! My start date should be negotiated today – they said we will negotiate to make a smooth transition for my current boss – June is fiscal year end. I expect the start date to be mid July – but I might be dreaming on that one.

What does a controller do?

Well I'm sure at each company the duties vary a bit. Our companies are set up with quite a bit of oversight – as we are owned by other larger companies and there is a lot of oversight & reporting requirements.

My duties as a controller include ensuring that the company maintains legal compliance with cash flow (we have legal agreements detailing how much goes where & when & how), ensuring the company stays on target with the budget and explain any variances from budget, approver of expenditures, signature on all checks, prepare all reports and statements, prepare the budget, prepare & present all reports to external parties & owners, oversee physical inventory. With this particular position it includes some projects currently under construction & future construction. Duties also include planning long range projects, working with proforma statements, working with internal & external auditors… there are a lot of areas & tasks – I'm sure I've left some things out.
