Hi guys and congrats to all who passed the exam.

I had interview with one of the accounting firms and got rejected yesterday.

I killed myself for the interview, and worked really really hard.

It really really hurts me a lot even though it had been almost a day since I heard the news, and I am so disappointed and upset about this. I don’t know how to handle this situation…

Guys I would really appreciate a lot if you can give me an advice on how I can handle this situation and share experiences on how you guys went through it. Thanks!

Well, yes, I know what you mean…..I know this one girl who in general doesn't smile at people and wasn't very approachable when I tried to talk to her. She seemed to be that way with my other friend too…..but what do you know, she got a job with a regional CPA firm and I did not! Hard to guess what the employers want…….

I mean, I know my boss likes to hire pretty girls 😛 And another boss on my floor likes to hire guys = less drama….so he wouldn't hire me by default…..

Oslife, I think you need to ask for candid and frank feedback from people you trust and respect. Although it might hurt to hear negative things about yourself, it can only help you improve. As long as you have the right mind set, you can accomplish nearly anything.

Is it normal to be super depressed and see no hope of living after rejection letter?

It's normal to be upset, but I don't know if I'd say super depressed with no hope of living.

You're not going to get the job every time. I must have gone on 10+ interviews before getting my current job. I'm convinced what landed my this job was my experience with previous interviews. I knew what the common questions were and I knew the best answers. What I'm trying to say is that I learned from my experiences and used those experiences to my benefit.

Does it suck not getting a job? Yes. Are they rejecting you because you're stupid, not worthy, useless, etc? NO!! You weren't a fit for them and they're not a fit for you.

Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and push forward! Use what you learned from the interviews to your benefit on the next one!

Six months from now it'll be a distant memory and you'll be better for the experience!

Seriously, how long was the interview? If I am interested in a candidate, the interview usually lasts 30 minutes to an hour. If I am not, I usually cut the interview short at 15-20 minutes.

What do I look for in an interviewee? Interest in the job, accounting knowledge, accounting experience, how well they work with others, how well they worked with their former boss, knowledge of the company. Have examples of how you improved a process, report, something. If it is an entry level job, apply that to a volunteer club, or any job that you had not necessarily accounting. I don't care if your only job was working at McDonalds, show me what you learned and how you were the best employee they had.

Basically, I want to see if you know accounting and you are not going to be a slug and just sit there until told what to do.

If I ask an open ended question, then I want a fairly lengthy answer.

@oslife, I know the feeling of being rejected too. I'm interviewing for a new job and I'm prepared for the worst but hoping the best.

All I can say is, I learned never to put my hopes too high with anything. That said, what I have found that works perfectly is to be as outgoing as you possibly can. For instance, when you have an interview with a Manager or whoever, don't be afraid to start off with small talk and some professional joking. A trick I learned was to start asking him/her questions even before they tell you to. Secondly, use whatever they tell you they're looking for in a candidate to connect it to what you've done. E.g. “We're looking for someone who's hard working and outgoing.”

“Well, you're describing me. Give me the offer already..haha! In my job at Company X I often begged my supervisor for more work. He was so pleased that he gave me this thank you note (display a thank you note) telling me that he will always appreciate my tenacity and hard work and joked that I saved his marriage haha.”

-Basically, you're not just answering questions, you're actually engaging the interviewer, making them feel at ease, telling them precisely why you're the perfect candidate for the job, and showing them that you are the most confident candidate. This trick has worked for me even when Managers had initially told me they weren't hiring (ended up hiring me on the spot). It must work for you too! If the above isn't an issue for you, find out what's the issue and just fix it 🙂

“Is it normal to be super depressed and see no hope of living after rejection letter? “

Coming from someone who suffered from major depression and on the verge of suicide during her college years, you sound like a person who is depressed on a regular basis. And I can tell you, that will come across in job interviews. If you are not a joyful person or confident, that will show up.

Maybe you need to go talk to someone before you continue your interviewing to make sure you aren't suffering from other issues. I can promise you, it won't get any better only worse. A depressed person can have the greatest job in the world but they will unconsciously sabotage it with lackluster performance.

Life didn't get better for me until I identified my issues and prayed a lot. I'm still not where I want to be and I made a lot of bad choices along the way but I'm content. I'm 34 years old and a single mommy but through all of it, its all good.

Get some help because whining on the forums isn't going to help you at all. Been there done that.

P.s. Perfectionists have a tendency to not be happy people. The minute things don't go the way we plan, we get all bent out of shape. Don't be so hard on yourself is my advice and realize we will fall short.
