I’ve been working at a CPA firm in NYC for the past 5 years, started here freshman year of College and still here upon graduation. I’ve been looking to move, only because my boss is a total a**hole. I love what I do, Tax, Audit, F/S Prep, etc. and the people I work with, but my boss is so…..

I recently went on a interview for a similar position with similar compensation. I’ve told myself, if they offer me the position I’m taking it to escape this hell I’m in now. Any experience/advice on telling your boss your leaving after being somewhere 5+ yrs? All advice is appreciated.

Ntw6817, I totally agree about the experience sign off. The boss could be a total jerk and refuse to sign if they know you are leaving.

Just tell them straight up. It's not like you only worked there for 3 months and are leaving. The Company got a good return on their investment on you for 5 years. This is business. But don't burn any bridges. Be as professional as possible.

Most likely if they like you they may offer you a raise, which I would still decline because (A) you hate your boss; and (B) they now know you want to leave so it may feel weird.

I personally would be a little insulted to get an email resignation after 5 years. Write a letter and give it to your boss in person. I agree with everything else though. Don't burn bridges and be professional. Be prepared that he will probably ask you where you are going and what you'll be doing. My advice is to make it sound a little different than what you are doing now only because if it is the exact same work they'll know you are leaving for personal reasons and may try to get out of you more information that could lead to uncomfortable conversation.
