Hello,

My friend has been struggling in landing a job in any accounting firms in the San Francisco Bay Area.. He has a Bachelor in Business Admin and a MBA with focuses on Finance and Accounting. However, he still has no luck in hearing back from any of the recruiters. I think he tried applied directly to the companies or through contacts at the Big 4, but still no luck!! I would assume the accounting firms would want to hire people with Masters degree as much as Bachelors if not more. He currently works as a Accounts Payable Specialist in industry. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you very much in advance!

Your friends issue is not an exception, I have both bachelor’s degree and MBA and working in Accounts Payable and can’t get a real accounting job based on recruiter’s assumption that I’m not experienced enough. The accounting recruitment process is a little bit unfavorable towards people with less or no experience.

I don’t grouch much about being in AP because I make about 40k plus benefits. I guess the reason why I’m not working hard on my job search also has to do with the fact that AP keeps me less busy and always get time to study for the cpa exams.

My advice to your friend is to look internally if external recruiters are not giving him the needed attention. He or she also have to consider other out of state jobs if relocating will be an option.

There might be other curve balls being thrown at him based on certain important details like content of resume and interviewing skills.

Outside of that structured process, experience is valued a lot more than education alone when considering hiring someone. And no pubIic experience = zero experience in the eyes of many recruiters/firms.

Long story: if your friend was proactive in his/her career they would probably already know what I already mentioned. But if not, these threads have information relevant to their situation.
