Hi CPA hopefuls, I just started searching for my first auditing job the past month and things are not going well. I would appreciate any advice or experience that you guys would like to share. Here’s a little about myself. I’ve been out of college for 3 years, and have been working as a financial analyst for a local bank for 2 years. I really disliked the banking environment because everything was about money, money, money and I didn’t like to deal with the dark side of banking, so I resigned from my job and spent a year to finish the education requirement and prepared for the CPA exams. So far, I’ve passed BEC, AUD, and REG and is working to pass FAR in Oct. I’ve been applying to all the mid-size firms and small local firms, but so far no luck. I know for one of the internships, the small local firm hired a master student. I’m planning to expand my search to other states because the competition in California is so ridiculous. I’m hoping the grass is greener on the other side =)

Networking is 90% of the battle imo.

HEY! i'm on the same boat as you. I'm working at an ibanking ops and trying to switch to audit. I'm looking at around northern VA, dc area…

    1. KEEP applying!!! apply apply apply dont ever give up on applying…

    2. I would get prepared for those interview questions. Try to use your experience in banking and relate them back to audit or being an auditor. Why you want to switch career to auditing. How you can help this firm. Why you pick banking the first place? etc. I got those a lot and those non sense behavioral questions (strength weakness, blah blah blah)

    3. @CPAjason, networking (even though i am no good at networking). Ask you friends, your friends' friends, neighbor, family… if they know anyone in public accounting, staff agency (michael page, robert half, etc)

These are just some of my interview experience… andi still haven't gotten an offer yet. Hope this helps. Good luck on your search!!!

    FAR 73, 75*, 79! n DONE!
    BEC 72, 75
    AUD 64, 75
    REG 43, 74, 72, 70, 88!
    *Expired...FML

Even though you graduated 3 years ago, you can still try On Campus Recruiting and going to your school's alumni events. I always see many different job listings (including audit) listed on my schools recruiting program. A lot are for first year's and a lot are for experienced hire. You can try talking to those counselors.

Also, I think a really great place to network is your college's alumni events. You can meet tons of graduates from your college and they can help get you the job your looking for.

I'm going to echo the post above. I graduated in May and was VERY lucky and blessed to find a staff position in a small-medium sized firm just because I happened to read an email advertising the job on my school's career finder.
