How to get into public acctg if you’re not a campus hire nor an experienced hire?

i have a unique situation. just over a year of big4 experience. had to leave suddenly a few yrs ago for health reasons. not sure I can get back in. would like to start again at entry level.

I don't think you would have trouble since you have over a year of big 4 experienced.

Thanks. I only have 13-14 months of big4 auditing experience so I'm not really applying for a senior assoc(2yr+ experience hire) type of position. And obviously I'm not really a campus hire either. I would be grateful for an opportunity to start as an entry-level associate at perhaps a medium-sized CPA firm. Do you have any advice on where to look? Thanks very much in advance for your help.

i would contact your old firm and tell them you are better. many positions at big4 and the other large national firms are asking for a year of experience because they don't want to spend the time / money to train. You at least have been through beginning big4 training. Search “top 100 accounting firms” on google will list all the medium firms you can apply to.

The best resource is who you know but if that's limited you should look at the websites of different accounting firms and look for positions under “experience associate.” If nothings listed you should still email them your resume. You can also check monster.com, careerbuilder.com, and maybe craigslist.

I would just contact your local college and find out if they are having an accounting meet the firms even any time soon. You can generally just show up, walk in, and start handing out your resume.
