Yesterday at work, the owner of the CPA firm I work at said some pretty ignorant remarks against mixing races and interracial relationships. This affects me because even though I am white, my spouse and child are not. My spouse is half white and half black, so our daughter is in turn is a mix of white and black as well. His remarks were as follows: “I don’t believe that races should mix. I think that people should only marry and have kids with their own races.” He then went on to say “I wouldn’t want my kids dating anyone black or from a different race and I will be sure to encourage them to date and marry with their own kind”. He also said after that “I don’t think that thinking like that makes me a racist” Which is weird because discriminating against someone solely based on their race is the definition of racism. The thing about it that is so disturbing is that fact that he has met my family on multiple occasions and he knows I have an interracial family. At first I was upset, but I need the job so I said didn’t try and combat him and say what I was really thinking. When I went home though and was playing with my daughter I started to get upset. I was thinking to myself….I’m working in an environment where my Boss wouldn’t want his son to date my daughter, NOT because the content of her character or because of anything she did, but solely because of the color of her skin. The weird thing is that I am most likely one of his top associates in regards to client development and also improving skill. He gave me a 22% raise this past January.

Even though I am being compensated for my performance thus far, after yesterday I want to quit. I don’t want to work for anyone who discriminate against my daughter solely based on her race….it makes me sick. The problem is I am not in a financial position to just quit. I have a family to take care of and it may take a month or two to find another job. Also I am currently in the process of my CPA licensing. He already signed my work experience form but I want to make sure everything goes through with the state board (just in case they lost it or they need another copy I don’t want him to refuse to sign my experience because I bring this up to him…most likely not but just in case).

My questions are as follows: Has anyone dealt with this before? Should I seek the advice of an Attorney and file a formal complaint? If I do file a complaint and there is tension at work can he just fire me or do I have any recourse in this matter?

Again, just the thought of working one more day for this guy makes me sick. Every time I look at my daughter it makes me sad that she has to live in a world where people like my boss would tell his kids not to be involved with her solely because of the color of her skin.
