How to avoid being a "job jumper"? - Page 2

I had a summer job throughout college for 5 years. Then when I graduated I took this industry job just to get experience (been here for about 2 years). Now that I’m deep into studying/on the path to becoming a CPA, I need to find a job that has a CPA I can work under. Also, I’m horribly underpaid.

Well I can’t find any public firms willing to hire! It’s not that I have a terrible resume, I just didn’t have an internship so maybe I’m not as valuable to them.

I am waiting to hear from a public firm I just had an interview with. I turned down one job because they didn’t have a CPA. There’s another place I interviewed with and I’m 99% sure they’ll make me an offer.

It’s a Fortune 500 Maintenance company. Like, top 150 in revenue I think. I do like the environment, and they have CPAs, but what if I work there for 2-3 years, get my CPA, and move to a public firm like I planned? Would I be considered a job jumper?

**I will say this. When I say I’m underpaid, I mean at this new job I’ll be making potentially 20-25K more/year with better benefits.Plus I’ll be able to move out of my parents’ house

Congrats on the job offer Tcohle. You've mentioned that you always wanted to work in public. Have you wanted to audit private and public companies, or are you okay with NFP's and Government for now while you're getting your hours?

I actually wasn't picky either way. Maybe I just haven't had enough experience to know what I want. But this is a positive step

That is great news. Raises can come fast and often in public accounting too. As well as Advancement. Congrats on the Offer

Thanks! Yeah I'm hoping so. Nervous about how I will start out there. I don't have much experience auditing but I think I'm a quick learner

UPDATE!: I just called a different CPA firm I interviewed with last week to ask them if they're leaning either way (and said i had another offer so just needed to know). They said they definitely want to bring me back for a second interview, and that the hiring manager was calling me Monday to schedule it for early next week. This was my #1 choice but hadn't heard from them until now!

I haven't gotten the paperwork for the first offer…

Should I see if I can get that 2nd interview in Tuesday? Is it likely they'll make their decision on the spot??

How long will the first CPA firm wait for me to make a decision? Keep in mind they just told me today and said they will be mailing the offer proposal to my house

You played that well by telling them you had another offer. Doing so makes the other company decide if they want to proceed or let you go for the other offer.

Don't worry about whether you'll get an offer right away. If they want you, they will get back to you quickly (since they already know you have another outstanding offer). If not, well… at least you'll know there's no mutual interest.
