How to approach a friend for a job referral?

I have a lot of friends at big fours and in a little while I would like to try to move up to a big four. Can anyone give me any tips on the referral process and how to go about doing it?

I haven’t talked about it with my friends but I know they would have no problem referring me given the big bonus they could potentially get for it. I am just wondering if I need to give them my resume, then they give it to HR, or do I mention their name somewhere in my cover letter, or call the recruiter and mention them? I would like to get some more insight into how it works. Thanks.

You get a response if you give it to a friend and they send it to HR. HR at EY just contacted me through email saying “so and so referred you for so and so position, please finish completing the online application” blah blah blah.

When I approached my friend all I said was “Hook a sista up!!!!!”

They said “I will, just please please don't hate me once you start working there”

You can start the process however you want. At some point if you're actually moving forward (as in they are actually interested in you), then you will put their information in your application as your referror. If you're going in as an experienced hire, which I'm assuming you are, then I would personally pick the firm you are most interested in and start there. Though some may not care, it may look bad on your friends if they refer you, you get an offer, and you turn down that offer. For your friends' sake, at least do them one after another. Should be helpful to have a good network, good luck!

SEE PEE A- I've seen your posts before but never honed in on your scores. IMPRESSIVE! I don't know that I've seen such a systematic dismantling of the CPA exam (8/30/11-11/29/11). So much for Becker sucking!

Simslayer- Thanks for the compliment. I do have it easier than some others in terms of my memory, but I also spent countless hours reviewing and doing things to stay focused (i.e. sleeping, proper diet, and light exercise to keep my stress down). To me, getting through the CPA was similar to my approach for finals, except it happened four times in a semester rather than just once. Repetition, repetition, repetition is the key regardless of your natural abilities. Good luck!
