I would not have believed this could happen if I hadn’t been there myself. Wow! That’s the only thing I can say.

This guy shows up at my office at 4:30pm on Friday, April 11th looking for a job. I introduced myself and then when I told him that he would have to come back at another time because we were swamped, he asked to speak to the “man in charge about setting up an appointment on Tuesday”. I played along thinking this has got to be a practical joke. I go tell my partner that someone wants to see him about a job and he laughed about the “man in charge” comment. He tells me to “let him stew for a few minutes”. So I did. While waiting on the “man in charge” this guy proceeds to tell me that he can do my job in 1/2 the time because he got 91% in Advanced Accounting so the CPA exam is going to be a “piece of cake” and shouldn’t take more than a “month to pass”. My license is hanging on the wall, literally right behind my head. My name is on the freaking building! And he never put two and two together. Finally, “the man in charge” comes out to my desk and introduces himself and then proceeds to introduce me as his partner and tells the guy that “She makes all of the hiring decisions” and points to me. This guy went from the deepest shade of red I have ever seen on a human being to white as a sheet in about 30 seconds. It took him that long to figure out that I was a CPA. I just smiled and said “Good luck with your job search.” When he walked out of the office, I looked at my partner and asked “Did that just happen?” WOW!

A great lesson to take out of this story is to be polite to EVERYONE you come in contact with in the job/networking search and not just the person that's supposedly “in charge” of the hiring decisions.

Sometimes the people that you think have little influence can sometimes have a huge influence on the hiring decision. I know that some employers will ask their secretaries their opinion of a candidate in terms of their attitude in the waiting room or just in speaking with her in general.

Apparently the candidate that came into Kricket's office hasn't had much experience in the REAL world to truly comprehend the “art of networking”. Be respectful, be polite and always obtain an employer's contact information to connect with them on LinkedIn to easily follow up with them in the future in case new opportunities arise.

    * State of MA CPA Exam Candidate
    - BEC: Sunday, August 24th
    - FAR: Saturday, November 29th
    - AUD: TBA for February 2015
    - REG: TBA for May 2015

@Skynet, I also wish I was given to do more returns for entities because I wish I can become better at those. I have done trust, estates, and like Kricket said, they are easy. Corporate returns are bigger. I did couple big 1120 returns in grad school and that was a huge help at work when i first started doing corporate returns. After I m done with the CPA, I plan on looking back to my textbooks from grad school and even in other tax books, and practice on those big comprehensive examples. What i have found online are usually paid courses, and they are very pricey too.

But if someone knows of any free study materials or examples of 1120 returns would be great if they share.

    FAR - Apr 2013 - PASSED
    REG - Oct 2013 - PASSED
    AUD - Apr 2014 - PASSED
    BEC - May 2014 - PASSED

Haha Kricket I didn't think dinosaurs like that still existed. I am going to try that next time I interview with a woman. “Can we hurry this up? I want to be sure I have enough time for the man in charge!”

Story would have been better if he would have followed it up with, “Oh and sweetheart, how about a cup of coffee while I'm waiting?” *light smack on the tush* —>Fast Forward 20 min—>*Kricket being led away in cuffs still gripping the man's balls and muttering “well worth it” under her breath*

@BobRoss – That is pretty close to what would have happened if he had done that! I probably would have stuffed his pockets with marshmallows and thrown him in a swamp! Gator's like sweets! Bwahahahahaha

Always be nice to the receptionist/secretary (even though that's not who you are Kricket).

The secretary holds the keys to the castle.

fuzzy: That's a great tip. I learned that one early on, employers like to see how you are when people aren't around. I strike up conversations, ask them questions about the company, how long they have been there, etc. If it's a female though, as a male you want to be careful with this, especially if the receptionist is particularly attractive you could come off as hitting on her (even if you aren't) and employers will definitely shy away from a sexual harassment risk. So friendly, but not TOO friendly is the perfect way to go…
