How much experience?

How much experience do you have to have to be a Director of Accounting? I’m thinking about going that route. I have almost 5 years and now I have my license (in the mail) so how much more experience would I need? Just thought I’d ask everyone’s opinion or experience with seeking this type of position.

    Thanks!

I don't think the # of years of experience are nearly as important as what you've done during that time. Have you supervised a staff? Have you had to interface directly with external auditors and/or board of directors? Have you done forecasting, had to explain variances, made capital decisions?

I've got well over 20 years experience in general accounting and most places told me I wasn't qualified because of the reasons above. I am now an accounting manager at a small manufacturer, and gaining experience in the above. I am in the 2nd round of interviews for a controller with a larger company but would not have been considered without my current experience.
