How long should you stay at your current job, before looking for another one?

I have been working in the finance department of a government entity for 15 months. The pay was about 15% more than my last job, but the work is too easy and I’m bored all of the time. I am unfulfilled in my current job, and I hate coming to work. I have been on several interviews, and I believe that I will have a job offer really soon. But my worry is that, only working for my current employer for 15 months will come back to bite me. How will this be viewed by future employers? How does everyone feel about this? Will I look like a job hopper? Will I look inconsistant? Will I look like I’m not settled in life? Will I look confused?

My older sister told me that it’s best for people to at least work for the same company for five or more years to show employers that you are stable and faithful. I’m don’t know, I believe that before a person dies of boredom, they should switch jobs asap, but maybe that is the wrong outlook. I need your help, my fellow ninjas.

The fact that you are getting interviews shows they don't seem to care. I left my FIRST REAL job out of college after 18 months. Had no problem getting interviews or an offer. Yes they ask about it. But you just answer. For me I hated the company I worked for, so I had to package my response to very limited and professional. Everyone seemed to take it well.

I've never heard the 5 year rule and it just seems silly. You should be in control of your life and your career. If you aren't happy then change it. You certainly won't be dinged by most prospective employers for bettering yourself. If by taking a new job you are better aligning yourself with your long term career goals, then you can speak to that. You can easily show them why the change actually shows you are seeking a more challenging and rewarding job rather than settling. That's a quality they would probably appreciate…

Never stay just to stay. You will just waste time and in 4 more years you will have to answer the -why did you stay so long if you weren't happy or really gaining anything from that job? – questions.

Good luck! Hope you find something that fits you better.

    I am finally DONE!
