How does it look in regards to your job search if you resign? Currently in the area I am at, most of our experienced staff have already left, and the remaining experienced staff are looking to leave as well. I have been here for about 2 years. It looks like we may be losing our contract. Also, we don’t really get training for assignments and that means now I would be assigned those since most of the experienced people have already left.

I think if you can frame your resignation in a way that looks positive to an employer, it doesn't look bad. You can't say you resigned because your boss was a jerk, or that the company was going bust (unless it really did go under soon after you left) because then you're basically bad mouthing a previous employer and that leaves a bad taste in an interview.

But that said remember its harder to find a job when you're out of work, and theres no guarantee you will find something before your savings or alternate income run out.

You can be discrete with us, but will have to explain to the next hiring manager why you resigned. Our even a recruiter will want to know why you resigned, before he/ she places you in the next position. Cause don't forget there can be a gap in your resume before you get another gig.

Its not a good idea to resign without lining up something.

Keep your position, when you reach to the compensation negotiation table, you will have more leverage. if you dont have a job, you will take wherever they give you…

It would be a good idea to keep it till you pass your CPA exams as well .. you are almost there, Work hard and let a recruiter do the search for you. specify your salary requirements to him don't waste your time in jobs you wont take …

Plus, if all the experienced people are leaving your area, then that leaves you ample opportunity for advancement, promotion and growth – maybe even a bargaining chip to stay.

I've only worked at two places (both CPA firms), but I always welcomed turnover above me because it gave me a better opportunity to move up quicker.

Unfortunately, it's easier to get a job if you already have one. It is completely ridiculous and makes it so people rarely have any sort of time off between changing jobs but it is the truth.

With that said, it doesn't mean you wouldn't get a good job if you resign without another one lined up. Just that the odds are better if you follow the norm.
