I don’t have a degree in programming I am self taught. I am almost a CPA and work as a tax auditor. It’s so boring, the traveling is getting old, and the whole thing is redundant. I really can’t take it any more I would rather do programming, I love programming almost went to school for it but I decided to instead go for accounting(huge mistake for my personality)

I have SQL experience from current job and that’s it

treehouse learning. Great system from my understanding, and your basic knowledge of even SQL will help in the learning process. Definitely worth the price of admission, and they even help with job placement at the end of your learning if you so desire. There is definitely a need for CPAs that can program or at the very least understand what the hell the programmers are doing.

Yeah I figured knowing accounting and programming is a killer combo but I don't know how to utilize it. RIght now I do tax auditing and work for the state and I use to word work loosely. I show up to an office and collect a pay check mostly.

You could also look into finding a more demanding accounting job. It sounds like your big problem is that your job is not challenging you.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

You could also look into finding a more demanding accounting job. It sounds like your big problem is that your job is not challenging you.

Why not try developing something useful related to your work? Maybe something that helps save time or a better interface, etc.

I looked into programming because it seems interesting, but I don't think my curiosity is enough for me to commit the man/woman hours.

I think a good starting point is finding out what your goals are. What kind of programming do you want to work in (don't say video games; everyone does :P)?

I think unless there's a long term possibility to do a lateral transition into programming in your company, it's a good possibility that you'll start form scratch as an entry level developer. In my opinion, try your hand at developing something related to your job or education. It's what you know and you understand the needs of users. Dunno, that's my .02.
