A little background: I graduated with my BS in Accounting in 2010, became a licensed CPA in Summer 2013 (No masters yet). I have been in industry since I graduated college, and have quite a bit of experience in most areas of private accounting now and make a reasonable salary. I am 24. I want to make the jump now before I progress much further in private, so I don’t end up having to take a paycut.

What is the best way to get a public firm to notice me? Robert half/Staffing agencies? And what would I expect to be paid as a first year?

    Any advice? Thank you!

Good luck! You definitely do seem like a great candidate for public so I'm sure you will find what you are looking for. 🙂

At the CPA firm where I work, our recruiter often finds candidates through linkedin. If you don't already have a linkedin account, you might want to set one up and try connecting to the recruiters at the CPA firms to look for a public accounting job. I know a number of people at my firm who brought in that way.

Just out of curiosity, where are you located? My firm is currently looking to hire one, possibly two CPAs or CPA candidates. It is a small firm though, but you would get audit and tax experience.

    REG - 64, 72, 81!
    FAR - 77
    AUD - 79
    BEC - 72, 79! And Done!

Another strategy is to go back to your old colleges recruiting fair or meet the firms as an alumni. In California you can actually go to any meet the firms if you pay $90 to join the public school system alumni and you graduated from public university. I was a UCSC graduate and got a job from San Jose States job fair. I will do the same later in 2014 if I am not working by then.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

Study Monk — Did you pay the $90 for UCSC's Alumni membership in order to go to any Public University's Meet the Firms? Or do you have to pay the $90 to San Jose State to go to their Meet the Firm specifically? And say you want to go to Long Beach State's Meet the Firms as well, would you have to pay their Alumni membership fee too? Or is it a one time fee that allows you to attend all Meet the Firms of any Public University in California?

This is actually very intriguing and I am sincerely glad you mentioned it. I attended school in Los Angeles, but now live in Northern California, so I figured I'll never be able to attend another recruiting event as an alumnus considering how far away I am from my alma mater.
