How do I get into Public (Audit) now?

A little background: I graduated with my BS in Accounting in 2010, became a licensed CPA in Summer 2013 (No masters yet). I have been in industry since I graduated college, and have quite a bit of experience in most areas of private accounting now and make a reasonable salary. I am 24. I want to make the jump now before I progress much further in private, so I don’t end up having to take a paycut.

What is the best way to get a public firm to notice me? Robert half/Staffing agencies? And what would I expect to be paid as a first year?

    Any advice? Thank you!

    Big 4 new hire here,

In my opinion, if you want an entry level audit position, go to your local state school. Or ask your family/friends if they know of any positions.

The problem with using a recruiting agency like Robert Half is that they will only find you positions at public accounting firms that require prior public accounting experience.

Salary depends on where you live. I would check out glassdoor.com for salary stats

Join your local CPA Society chapter; go to their events, become involved in it. Network, hand out your business card to other member/officers. Tell 'em you wanna get into public auditing. Quick, easy way to get a job. Matter of time before someone contacts you looking or tells you about their firm that is.

Personally, I would just reach out to the local recruiter of the public accounting firm you want to get into. They often take people from industry, you might be surprised how willing they are in taking you.

” reach out to the local recruiter of the public accounting firm you want to get into. They often take people from industry,”

Often? I'd be surprised if this is true. From what I've seen and heard this is actually the opposite. I'm thinking this might apply to smaller firms, but it'd be hard to believe it's true even for Mid sized regional firms. Not even mentioning Large Mid Tiers like BDO, GT, etc. or Big 4.

Care to elaborate more? At this point I'm just curious.

The economy is growing at an accelerated pace and I have noticed Big 4 have been HURTING for people.

I personally know 3 people that moved from industry to Big 4, one was poached from industry to come to Big 4 from a recruiter via Linkedin.

OP is relatively young, recently graduated 3 years ago, and just got his/her CPA license. OP is prime target to move into Big 4 as OP isn't too established and can afford a paycut if there is one.

From a hiring perspective, Big 4 would be dumb to overlook OP. It's more common than you would think, more so from a tax perspective.

Good luck! You definitely do seem like a great candidate for public so I'm sure you will find what you are looking for. 🙂
