So a little background info. I worked at Big 4 for about a year and a half, got laid off, and then moved to a smaller firm (we only have 8 people) but I really dislike my job. On Friday, I got a great job offer for a corporate accounting position and am really excited. However, I am terrified to tell my boss during the busiest time of the year that I’m going to be gone in 2 weeks! I am responsible for about 100 tax returns and I’ve literally only done 1 so far!

    HELP!

You have to do what's best for you.. As long as you don't burn any bridges. I had to tell my boss I was leaving around the exact same time and right before closing our year end. Seize the better opportunity!

I agree with peanut – is stinks with the timing but you have to do what's best for you! Maybe just try and get as many tax returns done before you leave? I am sure that's not going to be all 100 but hey at least you're trying! Hopefully your boss will understand how great of an opportunity this is and will be able to fill your position quickly… don't stress take the better job!

Put in your two weeks ASAP. At least give them the chance to find someone.

    REG 80 2/7/11
    FAR 91 10/8/11
    AUD 97 11/22/11
    BEC 96 2/4/12

Extensions are there for a reason. Don't feel bad, just do what is best for you.

Your former boss and coworkers will talk shit about you and blame everything that happens during the next year on you. I've seen it happen time and time again at small firms. He might even tell you to forget the two weeks and just go, that seems more likely based on my experiences. But who cares?

You don't like your current job and found a better one, so take it. If your current firm were overstaffed they may very well give you or anyone else the boot even if it hurts your feelings. Just don't plan on a glowing reference in the future unless your boss is actually somehow a decent, reasonable individual.
