Might want to get in touch with the college you attended if they have a career services (or similiar) department. Unfortunately, it seems easier to go from public accounting into industry and harder to go from industry to public accounting. Due to this, I agree with potatogun. Get on linkedin, find networking organizations in your area and start meeting people.

Unfortunately the job market out there is tough, and lately it seems to be about who you know. Good luck in your search!

Recently, I decided that I wanted to get tax experience but part time only. I like my current company, however a CPA license is not needed at my current job.

I emailed all the accountanting firms in the surrounding areas, I said I have no experience, extensive book knowledge and desire to learn. I was shocked with how many responses I got. The firms are telling me about their goals and lines of business they want to go after. I have two firms that are going to get back to me in December with their decision. Both of them can bring a great future for me.

I think the important part was my willingness to learn and think outside the box. I have no clue what they are going to pay me.. but it's a start! Can't beat the experience! I have an MBA, 4 years of accounting experience-2 years corporate and 2 years manufacturing-quickbook knowledge.

I don't make crap for a salary where I am currently with what I have to offer, but I keep telling myself I'm building my resume for a great future.. maybe? 🙂

CPA someday brings up a very good point…this time of year firms are gearing up for tax season. I would consider contacting a few in your area and see if they have a need for seasonal help…it may be part-time/temporary but it could always lead you to a permanent position there or even a great reference and perfect experience on your resume!
