How important is a school’s prestige when it comes to picking a grad school?

I will be (but planning to look for an employer who can afford to foot the bill or pay me enough so that I can). I just had relatives ask why I don't want to go all the way to a more prestigious grad school program, but I feel like that's a lot more expensive than I want (as most of the programs that don't just offer an MBA or a masters in accounting appear to be out of state for me). At this point I would rather work full time and study part time. Besides, many of my friends who've worked in big 4 have done the masters program I've got my eye on, even though the name doesn't seem prestigious, and they've said it's a great experience.

I see you have work experience and such so I think as long as you went to an accredited school that big 4 recruits from heavily you should be fine. I went to a relatively in-expensive school compared to my friends in high school and I make the most out of all of them plus I got scholarships and such. I only have a bachelors but if am looking into going back to get MBA and if employer is footing the bill I am going to get that Ivy league school because I'm not paying for it, otherwise I would look for the best VALUE, not the cheapest one, but the best value. I think the prestige thing is overrated but once you are a part of it I'm sure it becomes a big deal. What are of the country are you from? It might get you connections at prestigious schools but i doubt it's worth the extra $15-20k/year in debt. butttt taking on massive amounts of debt is the american thing to do! haha I think you'll be fine getting an MBA anywhere as long as it's not online or some ho dunk school.

Ah, I'm located near the White House, so most likely I can't work and go to an Ivy League school at the same time (unless they let their employees take time off to be full-time students :D!) and at this point I'd rather be a part-time graduate student. But what are the chances of a part-time student getting any kind of scholarship, much less a TA position? lol. Anyway, I agree about getting the best value out of the program. That's why I've been really looking into the courses. The program I'm looking at isn't an MBA from a prestigious school like Georgetown, but it's in the lower half of the top 100, still a masters program and the curriculum is something that fits my career and personal goals. Thanks for the reassurance and the advice! 🙂
