Got a job offer, BUT

I think it will be rescinded once they do their background check. I have bad credit from a failed business in 2008-2009. There is nothing I can do about it (just have to wait for the 7 years to pass.)

In another interview, I told the interviewer about the credit problem because the background check came up. This time, I didn’t because the background check came up after the offer (and with the person from HR, not the interviewer.)

Because of who the employer is, bad credit is likely to be a problem. It’s too bad, because I would do a good job and I am not a thief. I just fell victim to the crash in 2008. 🙁

I would venture a guess that bad credit due to business fluctuations would be viewed differently than being a slacker.

Don't count your broken eggs just yet.

If they are that petty, you probably didn't want to work there anyway. Been there done that, got the baggage.

Best of luck, excited for you.

I used to work in Benefits Acct. for a credit union and dealt with these sorts of things on occasion. I can remember 3 different ones just off the top of my head…

    1. Divorce where the candidate's spouse ran up large amounts of credit card debt

    2. A candidate's husband was a sales person at a car dealership. He was straight commission and was barely making anything during the economic downturn.

    3. Another candidate's family member was dying from cancer and he didn't have insurance, so she was having to charge a lot of his medical bills and prescription medications to help him out.

Despite their bad credit scores, all 3 of those people got hired and were great employees.

So with that being said, I would just write a letter explaining the situation, and I bet it won't be a problem at all. Like the PP said, if they can't see past that, you probably don't want to work there anyways.

I worked in banks for a number of years. Credit scores were an issue, but only if you are a deadbeat. Believe me, banks and finc institutions know how to discern a slacker and a deadbeat from someone that fell on hard times. There is a difference. If they are that interested in you, they will do the work to find out what the issue was. If they don't care enough to look into it, probably dodged a bullet if they rescind the offer.

I know that's hard to hear when you need a job. But let me tell you, working for people that have a poor value system is no way to spend your life.

Thanks, guys. I am not desperate for a job, so that is good. I am just pretty sure this would be a VERY good place to start a career (not Big 4, but on the same level.) He told me that they highly recommend that temps apply for permanent jobs while they are temps. There are two positions open that I would be great in, and being a temp there would definitely get my foot in the door.

I guess we'll see how it works out!

@ Renee I am in the exact same boat as you are, although I am not lucky enough to get a job offer yet. 2008-09 killed me (ahem….real estate burst). Like one of the other posters said, a lot of the time they are just looking for bankruptcy and/or charged off credit cards so if a lot of the other areas of your credit report are solid you should be ok. Good Luck.
