whopperParticipantI’m thinking about going back to school and learning more about databases, etc. I really like working with accounting software. Does anyone know about taking this route? Any specific IT degrees that compliment a CPA?

Jordan23ccParticipantI got my grad degree in Management Information Systems. I think it's a really good compliment to the CPA. I took class on databases and SAP. I think it's a really good background if you're interest in consulting or ERP system implementations.

whopperParticipantawesome, I'll have to look into those courses. If you don't mind telling me, what type of positions did you work for with the Management Information System Degree?

Jordan23ccParticipantI just graduated, so I don't have any work experience yet. But, I got a job with a big 4 firm doing IT audits (basically internal control testing). However, I know there a lot of opportunities with an MIS degree. You have DBA, systems analysts, project manager. That's one of the reasons I chose MIS for a grad degree. It's opens up a lot of doors in a completely different direction than just a CPA. From what I've heard though at least at my firm, the IT/CPA background is in pretty high demand.

AnonymousInactiveIn my area, job postings for IT Auditors outweigh Financial Auditors 2:1. It seems like a good field to get into if IT is your thing.

MayoParticipantI'll just add that for Internal Audit (based on my personal experience) one to two years of regular audit plus multiple years of IT audit is the future.
Locating a candidate with that IT/Auditing background is hard to find. In addition, with the economy picking up it leads to more M&A activity. Which then leads to large companies buying multiple small ones. One thing overlooked is the ability for the small companies to adopt, implement, and/or integrate the same AIS the parent company uses.
In which case, understanding of IT systems and potential accounting pitfalls is paramount. While a strict IT education and IT audit background works just fine, the more in demand employees are those with a mix of both accounting and IT knowledge. This is particularly useful for companies that are complex but relatively small (i.e. public but with not tons of corporate employees). The reason being us that communication is less complex (IT and Accounting are probably only a few cubicles away on the same floor) and therefore there's no need to add new departments when one Senior/Manager-level person can fill that role.
So, basically someone in traditional auditing can attain a IT related degree or certification. At least at my Big 4, a high rating and/or a CISA certification is usually enough to make the switch after one or two years.
I mentioned the need for IT skills in Internal Audit, but this also can apply to a hybrid position which interacts with the IT and Accounting field. However, that role is potentially temporary (i.e. Unnecessary once if and when M&A activity ceases) and I'm not sure what the long term prospects are. However, I imagine consulting (firms like Accenture or as a sole proprietor) or a lateral transition to the Accounting or IT department are possibilities. Again, there's always a need in Internal Audit regardless.

msgoldsParticipantThat is exactly what I am doing now. My original experience is as an Auditor, but now I am doing ERP Implementation work.
I just recently started back to school part-time for IT through Virginia Tech's Online Masters in Information Technology program. The entire program is online, and it is ranked #2 in the country. The program is a joint venture between the college of Business and the College of Engineering, so you can focus in areas like Business Information Systems, Software Development, Information Security, Healthcare IT, etc.

wannabeCaliCPAMemberI have a question about CISA certification: has anyone considered taking those exams after CPA? I am considering them. However, from what I am reading on the website about CISA, work experience in in the field is also required (just like for CPA). So, i am wondering if this is exam is worth doing or not. Any thoughts on that?

abranaughParticipant@CannotPassAgain
I currently am a programmer at a company where we develop a lot of applications in house. When I was hired, they placed me on the accounting team because of my accounting knowledge. It definately has helped since most of the programmers come from a computer science background and does not understand the business side of things so it takes them a while to pick up on some of the accounting concepts and understanding why certain things need to be done. Also on my team where accounting knowledge would be helpful is for our Business Analysts. They are the liasons between the programmer and the business and come up with the functional requirements and whatnot for any changes/enhancements to the systems.

msgoldsParticipant@CannotPassAgain, have you looked into ERP development? I do ERP implementation, and we have developers who we employ to make software customizations and work on developing the new versions of our software.
