Are there any forensic accountants on this forum? If so, what was your career path getting into forensic accounting? Or do you know of any companies that offer entry level forensic accounting work? What specific experience or education would you recommend?

I recently graduated with a bachelors in accounting and work at a tax office and I am working on my CPA license. However, while I do enjoy tax down the road I really want to try and get into forensic accounting, thus the reason for these questions.

There are firms out their that hire entry level staff for forensic..you just have to research for which ones do.

Audit experience will be helpful..tax not so much..obvioulsy as youll be investigating fraud.

I would want to know too. I passed my CPA exam and have tried to look for forensic accounting but no luck so far. There likes non-forensic accounting job in my area. 🙁 so sad … i like to know more about tax as my job now includes tax prep but I don't want to do it as my main duties in a long run. 🙁

I am working on starting a forensic accounting division for my company. I would suggest looking into the ACFE. They have a bunch of “free” resources on forensics, controls, and fraud investigations, various career advice, and they recently started a mentorship program for members. Depending on when you graduated or if you plan to continue your education you might be able to get a student membership. Student membership costs $25, or $399 which includes the certification exam and study material. Even if you decide not to get certified, the resources are valuable.

I always knew I wanted to do forensic accounting. After a year at a CPA firm I was going to set up job alerts and do research, but I actually got lucky and around 10 months into my time at the firm I was sent an entry level forensic associate job posting. I applied and got the job. The posting was on Indeed.com. Since starting I've loved it and I am grateful I got into forensic accounting so early rather than waste time at a CPA firm not learning the forensic skills. I got my CPA during my time at the CPA firm though. Now I'll probably do the CFE.
