I’m wondering if I can get some advice on reaching out to companies for an entry-level auditor position. Some companies don’t have an opening on their website, but I’d like to reach out to them to leave an impression and ask. I’m planning to send out my resume and a cover letter to offices… should I call and email after a week or so? Or call first, and then send my resume? What’s the best combination/method? Thank you!

Set up a linkedin profile and look for the recruiting managers in the company to get in touch. I've been contacted directly by them through linkedin so if you do some digging you might be able to find the right people (unless you have direct contacts in the company). I'm not in audit but presumably you can do the same for audit.

If you don't have one that is. Also, use professional pic (think suit) and do fill out some of the relevant portions of your profie at the least (think condensed resume geared towards the job you're looking for).

Thanks Tina! I have been updating my linkedin profile and gotten some messages from recruiters. Unfortunately the positions weren't supervised by an active CPA (which I am looking for) so it didn't work out. Should I send the recruiters an InMail? Would that be more effective than a hard-copy resume sent to their office?

I mean you need to search for the recruiters yourself and get in touch with them. These folks get tons of resumes from various sources so you have to find a way to distinguish yourself. If I were you I would try to establish contact via linkedin mail before sending a hard copy of the resume to their office. Also do your research ahead of time. For ex. go on a big four website and see if they are looking for any positions at all in audit. When you email the person you mention in your email that you noticed on the website that they are looking to fill in audting positions. Then you mention that you are looking, etc. I'm summarizing but hopefully you know what I mean.

Are you using your friends/networking events as sources?

It's kind of strange that these positions aren't supervised by active CPAs especially for audit.

Thanks again, Tina! I will try to do that this week. I'm a recent grad and have been going to networking events to go through campus recruiting, and I don't really have friends in accounting field who have been there for a while and can refer me. I didn't study accounting in college. But I will send a brief introduction to recruiters and see what happens!

Also, the recruiters that contacted me asked if I was interested in a position in finance! Maybe I came up in their search because I have a degree in Economics? 🙂
