Don’t really post as much since I finished my exams last year, but this is the best place for me to share my experience since starting my professional career.
I started working at a small firm in NY last summer and just reached my one year anniversary last week. There are about 10 accountants and 2 partners who each have their own clients. I exclusively work with one partner and another manager and the other accountants mostly work for the other partner. I’m not given nearly enough work to keep me busy and a good chunk of what I do is not very challenging. We have mostly small business clients so a lot of my work is done on Quickbooks and either doing bank recs or write ups for the companies. I do some things for a couple of my bosses bigger clients, but it’s mostly the smaller ones I work on. I also do some tax work, but even during busy season I wasn’t all that “busy”.
I’m always asking if there’s anything I can do or help with and they don’t seem to give me enough work. I spoke to the partner regarding this a few weeks ago and he said not to worry about not being too busy and that the other manager should be showing me more of what he’s doing when I’m not busy (which he isn’t).
At this point I feel like the odd man out and don’t want to be held back. This is my first accounting position and I’m already starting late in the game at 36 so I’m trying to learn as much as I can as quickly as I can. My boss is a great guy and I’m grateful he gave me an opportunity with no prior experience, but I have to do what’s best for me and my career moving forward.
I was going to try and stick it out through one more busy season and start looking for something new next year, but now I’m wondering if I should start looking sooner. I sent in my application for my license last week so I’ll probably be waiting till around October or November until I’m licensed.
Any advice on my situation and what I should do? I’m not even sure I want to stay in public, but I don’t feel like I have enough experience yet to start somewhere else.
