Experience for Licensure

I haven’t worked in a true CPA firm yet, but I have had bookkeeping positions. I have a MAcct and I am almost done with my CPA exams. I am planning on securing a job for the beginning of the year to satisfy the one year experience requirement for licensure. Did everyone get paid for their year of experience? If usually paid, does anyone have a range or a minimum that I should consider for pay?

I have no basis to go off of and I don’t want to look like a complete idiot or get taken advantage of. Knowing that I have to get the experience to get licensed, I feel like firms can really use that to their advantage.

Any information helps…this is all new to me! Thanks!

You have to get paid. If you work you get paid; I cannot imagine how any other arrangement could be legal. Maybe there are students who get credit instead of money (although that seems illegal too, but perhaps it varies by state). But that's not your situation.

I've worked in NY and CA and always got paid.

As to a range, sorry, I have no idea. I expect this varies a great deal by location.

    Good luck to you.

I am looking to work audit for experience. I thought of doing it as an intern since I work tax anyway. I'm even willing to volunteer as long as I can get the sign off for audit. I have my own business…do you guys think there will be a conflict of interest when approaching other firms for audit experience?

    It begins with a 75
