Anyone here have experience with both internal and external audit?

Can you comment how they compare / contrast, which you are with now, which you prefer?

I am in Internal Audit, and never worked on External Audit, but my wife worked in External Audit.

She didn't have work-life balance during busy season, she worked until 12am, and even 2am at latest.

As compared to that, my Internal Audit work was giving me the work-life balance, so that I was able to manage my time for CISA exam, and CPA exams (3 done, and REG in progress)

And salary wise, I think internal audit pays more. It may vary in companies, but for me and my wife, she is senior auditor in public accounting firm, and I am auditor (lower than senior), but i am getting paid more than her. Wife is in Financial Audit, and I am in IT Audit, so it makes a little variance on salary difference, but anyways 🙂

    Hope this helps.

    Currently:
    CPA - Class of 2013
    ALMI (Associate, Life Management Institute)
CISA - Passed in 2011, Certified in 2014

    In Progress:
ASA (Associate of Society of Actuaries) - EXAM P (O), EXAM FM (O), EXAM MFE (X), EXAM MLC (X), EXAM C (X)

How do you get into IT auditing? Did you minor in computer science? With IT audit how much actual accounting are you dealing with?

I have worked in public practice all my life, and as much as I love what I do, the terrible lack of life balance is brutal.

I'm dreaming to be an internal auditor and after passing the CPA, making that transition either in government or private companies.

Salary is higher as internal auditor and personally I like to travel, hopefully my languages help for that purpose.

I would say external audit is good for students, but if you want to make a life, I would suggest to switch to other area.

    Thanks

I started in external audit and only “lasted” 18 months before I made the move to internal audit. I had no work life balance while working in external audit and was always exhausted. I moved to internal audit at a university and absolutely love it. I have a fantastic work life balance, the pay is much better and I feel much more valued at my current job than I did before. I could never imagine going back to external audit in my wildest dreams.
