I’m finally at the last week of my internship. I think I know my fate at this company on thurs. I’ve been asked to fill out an exit interview forms. There’s one area where it says workload. I want to mark disatisifed since I am. I’ve been here for 6 weeks. Only 3 of those weeks, I was assigned to a client. The remaining 3, I was in the office and pretty much doing hwk and leftover projects for my managers. This is wrong, but since I wasn’t assigned to anything (even though I emailed everyone for work), I passed the time looking up other jobs and finishing my online classes.

Would it look badly if I chose Disatisfied? If I’m hoping for a job offer on Thurs.

    Please help.

Usually when you think someone is dissatisfied with their workload its because it is too much. However, I think if you didn't receive any work for 3 weeks you must put dissatisfied, or they will think you like not working.

Hopefully there's a box where you can explain your answers, or some clueless partner will review the form and think you checked “dissatisfied” for workload because they gave you TOO MUCH work.

I would think you would have an actual interview and not just a piece of paper. If that is the case I would express your dissatisfaction then. I also agree with Tripp, if there is somewhere to explain it I would do that as well. Make it known that you are willing to work and are just a little disappointed you weren't given that opportunity. Also make it known you attempted to find more work on your own so they didnt think you just sat there. Either way i think you will be fine in terms of getting an offer if all else went well. They know they didnt assign you so its no fault of your own and they cant blame you for being a little dissatisfied.

Thank you EVERYONE for the replies. I've been HELLA stressing about an offer since 2 weeks ago when I was literally STUCK in the office with no work to do, even though, I've been BEGGING for work. Whether or not, there's an offer. A part of me has moved on and I've already been applying to other places.

There's an actual interview. This is just the form that I have to fill out before I enter the interview.

@hasy… Are you from Northern CA? You said “HELLA” that is so NorCal…

Anyway, having had an intern last summer what I would most appreciate is constructive feedback. I get that it was boring sitting there for 3 weeks. However, from the employer's perspective, it takes a lot of time to give an intern work that may or may not get done correctly. Also, I tried to be mindful of the work that I gave, not just give a bunch of copying and collating. I would appreciate if the intern explained that not working made them feel like they weren't contributing or whatever and some ideas, going forward. Just saying you were dissatisfied sounds like complaining. Make your complaint proactive. If it was a bad experience, as an employer I probably wouldn't want to have another intern. Unless I felt like it was a learning experience and I have some ideas for the next year. Good luck!

@StephAV, I was about to put a disclaimer saying I WASN'T from NorCal. SoCal, born and raised! I just have a LOT of NorCal friends attending college.

As for the constructive feedback, I've been on 2 clients. When I was assigned to desk duty, I personally reached to my first senior and manager and asked them for feedback. They even said they liked that I reached out personally. In addition, I asked for a progress update from the HR director and she asked the manager and senior from my 2nd client. All of them were good, nothing particularly BAD stood out besides this one thing where I was yawning a lot (if not more than recommended) during a client lunch. I've apologized, even though I haven't the chance to redeem myself since I haven't been on ANY client besides driving out one day to help out a team. After every small assignment I've been given at desk duty, I've always asked, “Do you need help with anything else?” So I don't know how to ask for more work.

So it's been hard to analyze whether I'll get an offer or not. But if I don't get it, I'm going to Beyond Wonderland. If I get it, I'm going to Beyond and Thailand.

I would keep the survey positive and mark satisfied. Then during the interview you can explain what you liked and what you disliked. A survey can't speak for you to explain your real thoughts and most likely it will leave a negative impression on the reader when they quite literally may spend 15 – 20 seconds reviewing your answers. Think about resumes. If a hiring manager or decision maker doesn't spend more than a minute or two reviewing a resume, they are not going to put much time into a survey.

The other part of your post is concerning. The quickest way to judge your fate at an accounting firm is by the amount of work assigned. If your unassigned, your overhead. Hopefully your given an offer. Keep us posted.

@Vern -No what I mean, I know what you mean. The fact that I have not been assigned work means they don't have work for me. But my start date would be in Oct. and who knows, maybe more people would transfer/quit by then. They've hired on roughly around 4 new associates in 2014 from what I've heard. So I'm not sure if this year would be the same. There's actually another audit intern who actually has been getting MORE work than me (again, it's the situation but I'm still a little upset bc it's slightly unfair). But I thought it would be okay, since she's still pursuing her MBA at the moment so she's not too free to start working yet.

Again, I truly believe I tried the most of what I can accomplish given my work here. If they do not extend an offer, of course, I will ask why and any chance, I can reapply in the future.

You have the right mindset. There are many other options out there. At least you found out as an intern.

Hello, everyone. So I have not-completely bad news. Within 6 weeks, I have been assigned to a client for 3 of those weeks. 3 remaining weeks, I've been in office, doing small projects and working on my homework (basically getting paid to do nothing). HOWEVER, I was told today when I made the complaint that I didn't get work, was because a lot of the work they planned at this time (busy season) was pushed back (so not their fault, since they have to keep their full-time staff busy as well). Even with ALL that, I received glowing reviews. Apparently, all the managers I worked with liked me. Even the one manager that worked with me for one day said he liked me and I spoke in total like 10 minutes with him.

I was freaking out for NOTHING. Note increase in white hair count and decrease in quality of facial complexion. But final result: they don't have an opening for me. The other intern who was getting more work, she already had an offer from last year. It would be nice to have an offer RIGHT AFTER the internship, but it's not so. I'm told to wait until after the official busy season which is the end of April to hear back from them. If there's any opening, I would be the first considered. She told me to keep in contact. I'll email her on Monday and thank you for the stuff.

I've already been applying to other stuff, but I guess I'm free to apply to other firms (even she said it's okay for me to do that). Thank you everyone for your support. It was great listening to all your feedback. I have not given up hope.

But here's the new question: Would employers look negatively at my internship position when I apply to them? Would they overlook my resume thinking that, “Oh, this girl didn't get a full-time offer, she's not good material”?

Sounds like they were turning you down in a polite nice way. However, keep your fingers crossed.

As to your question: No, it wouldn't look negative that you didn't get a full time position. It would show you were able to get “hired” for the internship, have some real experience, and probably help you get an interview. Now during the interview, they may ask you to tell them about the internship. I would suggest you don't tell them the details you told us above about assigned work and productivity ratios. They may deduct that you weren't hired and assume something was wrong and not ask why. Focus on the fact that you can't wait around for them and so your looking for a job. Also, don't give the perception that you would take a position with them, and then shortly leave for the other place. When in front of any potential employer/interviewer, its best to make them feel that they are your #1 choice to work for.

    Good luck.

“Would employers look negatively at my internship position when I apply to them? Would they overlook my resume thinking that, “Oh, this girl didn't get a full-time offer, she's not good material”?”

Not at all! Employers will look at your resume and say, “She did an internship, so she has experience. Great!”

Not every internship is meant to result in a FT position. Even if they offered you the position, you may realize that you don't want to work for that company or you don't want to do that kind of work (I personally experienced both when I did my internships). No way would an employer think anything negative about seeing an internship on your resume, so definitely do NOT worry about that at all!
