    Hello everyone.

I graduated with a MBA in August (3.9 GPA). Since then, I have been taking the CPA exams. I only have FAR left, and it is scheduled for April 2. While in school and studying, I have been applying for jobs in accounting. I have been trying to get a job in accounting for a year and a half. I have applied to internships, entry level positions, and a few senior level positions. Yet, none of them will hire me because I do not have experience. Even with having the exams nearly complete, I am getting nowhere.

The sad thing is that I have been working for this company for the past two years. Last month I applied for an entry level accounting position with them, and they turned me down because I don’t have any experience. Yesterday, I get a call from my boss offering me a position (not in accounting) that pays over 50K. I would have accepted 30K for the accounting position.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong here. I have applied for Public, Industry, and Non-Profit positions.

very interesting article. honestly though, if i were a candidate and got an internship at a company i wanted to work for (and fortunate enough to be able to work for free), i'd intern for free too and i wouldn't say jack or file a complaint – as long as it wasn't super stressful.

A month or so ago, I was hiring, in South FL, for a single, simple staff accountant job. You should have seen the flood of resumes that came in. Most were way overqualified….these people had to have just been blindly flooding the ads with their resumes, as they couldn't have been serious.

I have no qualms about hiring bright recent graduates with little or no experience……I was once one myself.

In the meantime, you know what, I'd say sign up with temp agencies and take temp jobs. It was one of the only ways I was able to build up some experience. Even though I was the stereotypical quick learner, no one would hire me either. And I should add, this was back in the late 90s, when things were booming…..I couldn't even get a decent job back then.

And a lot of thinly veiled political BS in this thread, I think.

Let's look at it simply. Our so-called “booms” of the past few decades were just propped-up houses of cards. Housing, tech, etc….greed and speculation. People “making money” for doing absolutely nothing.

I still haven't heard a convincing argument as to why it's good to participate in an economy as if you were playing in a Vegas casino. And that's not a political issue, either, because it's not as if that's ever changed whether one party is or isn't in power.

I read an article regarding unpaid internships a few months ago in the WSJ. In fact, not only were some of them unpaid, but the parents of the intern would actually be PAYING the company to give their kid the experience. Accounting was never mentioned in that article but I think it's somewhat common in Marketing, Communications, and maybe some other fields. Experience is experience in this day and age and a lot of people are willing to do what it takes to get ahead, even if it means an unpaid internship.

NY CPA ..I am on the same boat as you.I thought passing all the tests would help me find something but chances are slim. And on top of that on this forum itself there are so many candidates who have passed but haven't found anything thing.I haven't passed all the tests but have started looking already because ..if I wait till I pass all ,its going to be too late..I am already bankrupt( not actual bankrupt ,but still)..LOL ..I am living with my parents ..and the frustration is rising everyday !!
