Ever been insulted during you job search? - Page 3

    I have several instances where I felt insulted during my job search. One story is when I applieted to an entry level accounting position at a fortune 500 insurance company. I already had a couple years of experience under my belt at a competitor in accounting and was currently working but I was being paid significantly less than entry levels were making so I figured why not. I also was/am pursuing my MBA and CPA

    I applied and the recruiter called back stating, “I see that you applied to quite a few positions… This position is entry level and you already have a few years of experience… I think you would be a good fit for insurance sales, I’m going to forward your resume to that area.”

    Nothing against sales, it does take skill and you can make money… But where did they get that I would be a better fit for insurance sales?

    Do you guys have any insulting job search stories to share?

    I wasn't really insulted since I have pretty thick skin. To paint the picture I spent ~2 yrs in Big 4 audit and was looking at new positions. A headhunter (clearly one with no real insight or connections to highly coveted positions), presented me with a staff accountant opportunity with a stated base range around ~$55k. At the time I was making just barely less than that.

    I've since found my own job without using a recruiter since most don't really seem to be able to get anything more than what I can find myself. Let's just say she wasted both of our time.

    I don't know if it was an insult or not, but I was once turned down for a job because they felt I was “to encumbered”.

    When I called to ask what that meant in relation to the position I had applied for, they told me that the job required a lot of travel and because I owned my house, they felt I wouldn't want to travel. WHAT? I really think it was because I was married and had a son, but they can't legally say that! So not sure if it was an insult or not, but I was better off, because the girl they hired, was laid off 3 months later.

    @LatinTurk.

    Is it possible that the recruiter was actually referring to a Revenue Recognition Accounting position (recording revenue on the sales of insurance products)?

    If so, perhaps it was a compliment and not an insult. Maybe you should call the recruiter back to clarify. 🙂

    I was interviewing for a entry level audit job and I had already told them that I was fine with travel. During the interview it came up that I had been a stay at home mom while I went back to get my accounting degree. I had been a Statistician for 5 years prior to switching jobs. The interviewer asked me if my kids would be able to handle me going back to work. I pointed out that I had been working for 6 months and they had adjusted fine. They later hired someone else but offered for me to interview for a tax position that is a 40 minute drive from my house but had less travel. I was and still am upset about that because I have a very good feeling that they did like me but really were concerned because I was a mom to young kids. (they brought it up more than once during the interview)

    Don't let recruiters push you around. The first recruiting firm I went to, I told them the one thing I would not budge on is that I wanted a senior level position. I didn't want to be entry-level again and didn't feel I needed to be coming out of public. They told me I didn't have the qualifications for a senior-level position, even though I was coming from a senior-level position in public. Instead, they threw a bunch of different “managers” at me trying to sell me entry-level positions at whatever firms would pay them the most.

    So I went to another recruiter, and this one ONLY presented senior-level positions to me and I ended up with 2 senior-level offers. I probably would have had more, but I ended my job search early. Job searching is hard… way harder than anything I ever had to do in public. You have to really know yourself, know what you want, and know how to negotiate. Kind of like buying a car. Good luck!

    Had a very pompous interviewer my freshman year of college. He bragged about how great their company was and how 85% of the employees had post grad degrees. Bear in mind I was only applying for a coop position. I knew early in the interview it wasn't going well and after he made a snide comment about me being in a fraternity, I was pissed off. At the end when he asked me what I thought, I said,”Based on what I've heard today, I don't think I would fit in at your company.”

    He was not expecting that. It took a lot of the wind out of his sails. It was the first time in the interview that I felt good about myself to boot.

    I get insulted during my job search when ever they don't call me back.

    I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

    "Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"
