What’s the difference? I was planning on doing taxes on my own using Drake. I know I need an EFIN but do I need to become an ERO as well? Thanks in advance!

EFIN allows you to e-file returns, but ERO has an added advantage. An ERO can be a software developer or the tax preparer. ERO gives you the added advantage of being the return transmitter, that means that you can even collect returns from third parties and transmit them to IRS, if the 3rd party does not have efile capabilities. But you have to be very careful being a transmitter for the third party, because in some cases IRS requires you to review the returns for accuracy even though you're just transmitting the returns. iRS have lots of information for EROs on their website, but sure you know what it entails before you sign up as ERO.

Thanks for the information. So I don't have to be an ERO in order to file with Drake?

When I worked in a firm that used Drake, they transmitted the returns, so I'm pretty sure they were the ERO. I don't think they charged anything additional for it either.

Like Lilla said, it's free and there could be a situation where being an ERO can be very advantageous for your firm. It's good to have it. I'm an ERO, I haven't considered the benefits yet, but I know it is a very good marketing tool.
