jkpoker1MemberJust wondering if I will be a lock to get a job at a cpa firm if I pass all 4 sections of exam before applying? I went through the recruiting process during college and didn’t receive any 2nd interviews with any cpa firms (wanna say I interviewed with 5-6 mid-size firms).
I wouldn’t say I was the most competitive applicant though on campus as my gpa was around a 3.0 and I didn’t have a great internship prior. Also my interviewing skills are sub-par. thanks for any advice.

umkcfuturecpaMemberWork on your interview skills – that and networking are going to be your ins, not just the exam. Yeah, it is a nice thing to be able to put on the resume, but it won't guarantee a job. Keep applying, keep trying. Don't wait until you pass because the longer your gap in unemployment is, the less desirable you become to firms.
How long have you been out of school? If it is less than a year and a half or so, you should give on campus recruiting another shot, or at least go back to your career center and see if they can offer some assistance. Sounds like you should take advantage of some mock interview practice!

umkcfuturecpaMemberOh, and don't give up or get discouraged by what I just said. You can do it if you set your mind to it and put the work in. Maybe not Big 4, but maybe even that if you really work on it. Look really closely at local firms too, because it isn't unheard of to spend a year or two there and transfer upwards to a national or big 4. 🙂 Good luck!!

AnonymousInactiveNothing is a lock.
Interview skills are more important than CPA candidacy.

mystical guyMemberI hate to disappoint but it seems passing CPA is just a reason for an employer to NOT eliminate your application rather than to hire you. The second hurdle is your actual work experience, third hurdle is your personality and looks.
You've got multiple levels of hurdles to deal with and the CPA is just one of them.

AnonymousInactive@mystical guy: Are you saying the OP's looks are subpar? lol.
To the OP:
“Just wondering if I will be a lock to get a job at a cpa firm if I pass all 4 sections of exam before applying?”
No, definitely not a lock – although it will surely help with getting interviews. I'd also argue, that all students/new grads who did not have success during public accounting internship recruiting season NEED to expand their job search and catch a wide net. CPA firms are not the end all be all and by ignoring other opportunities you are both missing out on some fantastic opportunities but you are also ironically making it less likely that you'll end up at a CPA firm eventually (if that's really what you want).
“I went through the recruiting process during college and didn't receive any 2nd interviews with any cpa firms (wanna say I interviewed with 5-6 mid-size firms).”
This could mean several things. It could mean you need to brush-up on your interview skills. It could also mean that it was just really competitive in your area and you didn't quite make the cut. It's probably a mix of the above two items. Whatever you do don't take it personally but also practice on becoming better – I've seen a lot of awesome people get passed over who then go on to have amazing careers. Honestly, sometimes the interview process is just about luck/clicking with the interviewer or having innate charisma, which can be harder for some people than others – even when they are performing at their absolute best and would make wonderful employees.
“I wouldn't say I was the most competitive applicant though on campus as my gpa was around a 3.0 and I didn't have a great internship prior.”
I know that some people tend to think that once you get a 1st round interview – they no longer look at your GPA, but I know that to be false. So that could have hurt you if it came down to you and others that they were on the fence about moving forward to 2nd rounds. The trick is to start thinking about how to curb any negatives during the interview, and how to make you a more attractive applicant going forward (e.g. getting more experience, passing the CPA exams…)
“Also my interviewing skills are sub-par. thanks for any advice”
well… work on that! lol. I'll also echo what others have said, if you have already graduated, it can be harder to get into entry level positions. Also, the longer you've graduated the harder it will be – especially if you've stayed unemployed this whole time. GET employed if you are not. Don't hold out for public accounting – if you've been unemployed for 6 months after graduating, it will be very difficult to get a job anywhere – and a public accounting firm will be more likely to hire someone in corporate/industry for 1-2 years than someone who hasn't been employed that whole time. Saying, “oh, i was holding out for public accounting and wanted to take a year off to study the CPA exams…etc.” is NOT a good nor a impressive reason to have that gap.

jkpoker1MemberLol at person who said looks matter. I would tend to disagree. I'm decent looking however I look really young. I'm 25 and probably honestly look like i'm 18-20. Also with the interviews. I don't think I can impove really. I think I have aspergers/ and or mildy autistic so I have trouble making eye contact and appearing nervous in new situations with people I don't know.
I currently work in customer service and hate my job because the pay is low and I work with people that only graduated high school. Work for a great company though that is a fortune 500 so may just try to get into an accounting role there. Honestly, I don't think I will improve my interview skills with how I am. I'm very shy and not confident at all. I had a few cpa interviews on campus but I believe I blew them as I didn't receive any 2nd round interviews. Also interviewed with some small firms off campus and didn't feel they like me haha. BTW sorry for long rant but I wouldn't mind working for a small cpa firm. I honestly just want to pass the exam, get my 1 year of experience and jump ship and work in industry. I still need to pass exam though which is very difficult
So basically right now I have a job that isn't helping me gain any solid experience in terms of accounting skills. I've discussed with friends that I will have trouble getting accounting job but they say you don't need great communication skills to work in accounting (I highly disagree with this). I've thought about getting my masters because my current company offers tuition reimbursement and I believe getting interviews would be simple if I had a 3.5+ gpa. I live in Syracuse NY which has a horrible job market for accounting. Most jobs I see are not even close to entry-level and CPA firms most interview on campus and pick from the top students. If I lived in a bigger city, I believe getting interviews would be much simpler because I see many entry-level jobs that don't require 3-5 years of experience as a pre-req.
I honestly just want to get my CPA and fulfill the work experience. I feel like I'll be a failure if I don't pass the exams and really limit my potential income down the road.

mystical guyMemberFrom a KPMG Partner, “Don't tell anyone but for every 5 hot girls I hire, I will hire two nerds.”
Looks matter to some extent. Research has shown that when two candidates are equally qualified, the more attractive one often gets the offer, assuming they're not a total a-hole or something.
Disclaimer is, looks matter to some extent but they're not the end-all-and-be-all. Just making a point that passing the exam is not everything.
But, of course, people don't wanna admit all this! lol

mystical guyMember@Anonny hehe. Not saying anyone's looks are subpar. I was making a point that people put so much emphasis on passing the CPA, CIA, CISA…etc… but they don't realize those can't get you a job. They're just one thing in the many complications involved in getting someone hired. I would rate work experience as highest on the list of complications, looks at in the lower categories of reasons people get hired or not hired, not the “end-all-and-be-all”

KimboroniMemberAlthough having passed the exams can help overcome a slightly low GPA, as firms tend to use GPA as an indicator of your ability to pass the exams. So when you do pass all the exams, highlight that on your resume in some way. It should help.
For the eye contact difficulty, you can try looking at their nose instead, which helps give the appearance that you are maintaining eye contact, hopefully without the discomfort of actual eye contact. Let your vision go slightly blurry so that you aren't full-on staring at their nose.
People do hire slightly awkward accountants, so you don't have to have amazing interpersonal skills to get hired. So just practice interviewing, and keep trying, and you should get there.
