Considering enrolling in an MBA in accounting program. I’m 45, male. The program takes a little more than a year to complete and would cost me over 60K in student debt. Interested in entering forensic accounting, don’t care too much about the MBA. No real career that I currently have.

    Waste of time and money?

    Hi blueocean,

    email me at laho@ahoandassociates.com

I am a fraud examiner/forensic accountant and got started about your age. I probably have some personal advice that I can share off-forum.

    AUD 88 (expired), 80 retake
    FAR 64,69,67,73,67,73,73,73, August 3
    REG 75 (expired) September 7
    BEC 72, 77

    The adventure continues...

I understand your interest in the program because 14 months is fast, and time is money.

However, I believe you should shop around for other programs, especially since you're not interested in the MBA. You're really only interested in the CPA.

What are your career goals? Do you want to be a self-employed CPA, or work for a firm?

If your interest is in self-employment, the MBA will be even LESS valuable than in situations that others have mentioned above.

Some states allow you to meet the CPA requirements with community college classes. Is that an option for you?

I believe there are several masters of accounting programs that you can complete in one year. That may give you what you need for less money?

Keep shopping! Consider ALL of your options before committing to $60K

    FAR - 86 - 2/27/14
    AUD - 75 - 5/29/14
    BEC - 80 - 8/31/14
    REG - 89 - 2/27/15
    Praise Jesus! I'm done!!

Op. I was enrolled in a 14 months MBA in accounting in NJ about 7 years ago. If you live in NJ then we might be talking about the same program. The program targets non-accounting undergraduate students.

There were about 10 or so people in my class above 40 years old.(they all had various backgrounds, IT, English, etc, and all of them got into big 4 after they graduated). From I hear, some are managers at big 4 and others turned private and became VP at banks. About 90% of the class got into big 4, and only about 2 or 3 people out of 50 who did not have job line up after they graduated (all due to working visa problem). If your current career does not have future, I would say why not go for it.

I can talk to you more about it. Feel free to pm me.

    Thanks for the advice, people.

Anwell — I would like to send a pm, but I don't see a pm option on this board.

Not sure if a comparison to 2007, when hiring was booming, is a good comparison….just saying.

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

I dont know if the hiring has slowed down in NJ/NY, went to the alumni event last year, still about 90% of people had jobs lined up after graduation. Maybe depending on the area where you are from? Then again, I am not looking for entry level accounting job either.

blueocean – what is your email? I can contact you that way.
