whopperParticipantThere seems to be a lot of info on large firms, but does anyone have tips on selecting a small firm to work at?

RandomAltMemberInteresting you should ask the question in that way…
I'm still searching for a job at a CPA firm (I work in an unrelated field). My preference, by far, is to work for a small firm.
However, as I have no experience, I cannot even get a small firm to look at me, let alone being able to select one (how I wish that was the case). Most small firms want people with experience, that they do not have to train.
Not sure what your work background is, but that is my 2 cents.

StephAVMemberDo you have work experience? Do you know what type of work you are interested in doing? Audit or tax or both? Any specific industry that interests you or you have experience in?
I'd use that basic criteria to search for firms that offer what you are looking for. I'd search via the web, networking, LinkedIn, etc. Then apply. If you have many to choose from I'd say try to get a feel for the culture/personalities and weigh that in your decision making.
If you are straight out of school, going to a mid-sized firm is going to offer a lot more training and a more formal support system, IME. A firm that hires a handful of staff a year straight out of college is going to have a better training plan set out for getting those staff prepared for job. My small firm experience was just 2 partners and an admin and they did not and do not really have time to train someone with no work experience.

whopperParticipantI have 6 yrs of acct experience with the govt but it was more ‘specialized' – I used to evaluate internal acct processes, identify deficiences/fix, and then automate the reconciliation. So, I believe there will be some carryover skill but we operated differently than the industry so I know I will have some learning curves in public. I definitely need to go to a small firm as I have family obligations and hate major politics but wanted some insight on which small firm may work out better. I have a stronger interest in audit but enjoyed being a tax volunteer this past tax season. I'll try pulling up info on these firms using social media and see if I can find out anything there. Thanks!
RandomAlt- I strongly recommend you volunteer doing taxes this upcoming tax season with VITA or AARP. This can be a resume booster.

AnonymousInactiveI work for a very very small CPA firm, just the partner and me. The good thing, I can do the engagement all from the beginning to the end (planning, testing, reporting). I really enjoy doing audit now more than before when I worked as a small part of a big audit team because now I can see how all parts plug together. Also, that means you can learn a lot in short period of time. The bad thing, basically no formal training, paying rate, benefits are minimal. Also, just 2 of us so it's very hard to ask for time-off…Just my 2 cents.

AnonymousInactiveFind a place that values YOU and what you bring to the firm. I just found such a place, where both sides thanked each other for joining the firm. Don't join a stuck up firm that doesn't respect you. I have no public accounting experience, but was able to demonstrate my transferable skills from the corporate world. Show them how you can help from the start.
The big firms saw me as a number. Small firms don't have all the HR red tape and can let you grow at your own pace. Find a place that's willing to let you grow into the area that best suites you, based on your abilities and interests. Ask if you will have a mentor, as this can determine your success or failure.
Lastly, gauge how honest the people you interview with are. Are they telling you how many hours you'll work during busy season? Are they offering info on how often and where you'll need to travel? If not, be careful!
Best of luck!

RandomAltMember@whopper … Thanks for the advice. Actually, I did volunteer for VITA for 2010 and 2011 tax season. I took off last year to start studying for the CPA exam (that did not work out too well lol).
I seem to be stuck in the horrible limbo. It seems every firm down here in south Florida is either hiring for interns or seniors. I can't take an internship, and obviously not a senior. I just hope eventually having all 4 parts on my resume will do something (whenever that turns out to be).

AnonymousInactiveI work for a small firm. I knew that is where I wanted to be, but was willing to work in larger ones to get experience to move to the smaller firms.
I selected my small firm from the job description. I am a little older, and this is a second career for me. When I went back to school, people would ask what kind of job I wanted, as accounting is different than what I was doing. I gave them my ideal job description, then one day I found my ideal job description for a position on Craigslist. Even though I did not have the needed experience I applied, got the interview and took classes to get the job. We did have to move to get the job.
When I was looking, I based things on the firm values, people who worked for the firm and some additional intangibles that I wanted. I asked questions to people in the firms about what would be helpful in getting the job, I also looked at what I wanted in a job and a career. I love my small firm!
Talking to recruiters was helpful in focusing me on what I really wanted in a job. They also provided good questions and pointed at things to look for in the firm I selected to work for.
