    Hi,

I am a recent graduate and I am currently preparing the NY CPA exam. New York requires 150 credit hours of education in which I already have 123 credit hours with me. I was wondering if I could just take 9 additional courses worth 3 credit hours each at the undergraduate level or does it have to be at the graduate level (ie/ M.Sc, or M.B.A)

    Thanks,

    John

It can be additional classes at the undergrad level. The credit breakdown looks like this:

    81 liberal arts + 69 accounting/economics/business

    Couldn't pass again!

Is there a difference between a graduate certificate and a graduate degree?

Some courses are certificate based and some are degree based. Does NY CPA education requirement accept both?

Also does it recognized pass/fail courses or do I need to have a GPA on the courses that I take?

    Thanks.

As always, the easiest and most reliable way to find out is a short phone call to your state board.

I went to Hofstra. We had to take one Minor (I took Finance), Advanced Auditing and then I took Contract Law and two other business classes. I think for the state you might need to have a minor or just 4 more accounting classes. All I know for a fact is that you need advanced auditing.

They don't have to be at the graduate level, however, 33 of those hours have to be accounting related classes. The biggest difference, to me at least, is that you need two years of public accounting experience without a masters to get licensed. You can still sit, but you cannot receive your certificate without working 2 years in public accounting.

    See this website: https://www.nasba.org/exams/cpaexam/newyork/

It's VERY smart of you to look into this before you graduate, I can't tell you how many people I know that got their degree in accounting and then found out they couldn't sit for the exam after they graduated.

    Good Luck.
