    My answer is “What is the range of the position you're hiring for?”

    If the range is good, put yourself at the low or middle part. If you can make the case, put at the high end (but generally they don't want to go there).

    If they push back and refuse to give a range, say “I don't want to be rejected based on my salary history.”

    If they insist past this point, it is obvious they're looking to cheap out and it is time to move on to another company.

    There is no legitimate reason for ONLY the candidate to have the burden of proof to provide the numbers, except to power trip.
