    What do you think?

Given the extensiveness of the exam and the time required, do you believe the salary later derived justifies the effort?

I used to think so, but lately, I’ve been having my doubts =/

They aren't a one for one match. You won't just jump out the gate making a ton of money. It depends on how hard you are willing to work for that money. If you pass the exam, but don't put forth the effort to be more than a staff accountant, I would say no. If you push to be a CFO or a Partner or own your own practice, then yes.

It's easier to say in hindsight, to once a person is done with the exam, I have no doubt that it'll be justified. A person should think long term, rather than short term as @Mamabear hinted. A person may receieve a bonus, compensation increase as a result of passing the exam, but can't expect to make the big bucks from the beginning. Experience > knowledge in my opinion. I'm not concerned if a college grad had 4.0's, I'd like to see how they perform on the job and interact with clients first…

There is a real barrier to promotion in the accounting profession if you choose not to get licensed. For the most part Big 4- Top 10, to Top 100 accounting firms require a CPA license to be promoted to Manager and Partner. This is where the real money is. Someone getting an accounting degree and not getting a CPA license is like going to Med school just for the hell of it (i.e. not becoming a doctor) Others can provide better analogies!

@mhueycpa – Agreed. Earning an accounting degree and not getting a CPA license is like going to the DMV for fun.
